An injury to a knuckle on his left hand has forced middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik to postpone his title defense against highly ranked Paul Williams.
A news conference on Tuesday to announce the bout, which originally had been set for Oct. 3 in Atlantic City, was also postponed.
The earliest Pavlik would be able to return for a rescheduled fight is Nov. 21, though it could end up with an early-December date.
Pavlik, who is 35-1 with 31 knockouts, informed Top Rank chairman Bob Arum of the injury on Monday.
He was scheduled to face the toughest test in his career in Williams, a lanky punching machine who is ranked third in the Yahoo! Sports poll of the world's finest boxers.
Williams is coming off a rout of Winky Wright.

People say he is a pitter-patter puncher who can't be that good if Quintana beat him, but I just don't see it. The guy is a one-man blitzkrieg. He punches from every angle, he fights with intensity, and he is almost like a robot in the fact that he never stops!
Sure, there are questions about his boxing skills.
Are there better fighters than Paul?
Yes.
Are there stronger guys in the ring?
Most definitely.
Could he beat Ivan Drago during his prime?
Probably not.
But just the fact that there is a guy out there willing to give his all, no matter what, is compelling enough for me. He is the quintessential old-school American boxer - a man who was more than willing to start from the bottom and slowly climb his way to the top.
And although Mayweather-Marquez will be great, and Mayweather-Pacquiao could be even more spectacular, I'd bet that I'm not the only one who would rather watch Williams versus the gorilla.

This article isn't even complete. There's no mention of the chance that the fight may never happen. The Williams camp hasn't agreed on a postponement. I'm curious, does Yahoo actually pay this Boxing "Expert" or so called "Journalist"????

The way Taylor faded vs Froch I doubt he'll be able to keep up with Williams pace as well.
Clottey may punch hard but he doesn't come at you the way Margarito does. The best opponent for Williams if Pavlik fight falls through may be Cotto at welterweight. But I'm sure he's looking for something sooner since he hasn't fought in a while now & Cotto has his hands full with Pacquiao in November. Who knows, maybe Mosely steps up now since the Berto fight doesn't look like it's happening. Funny how he's fighting from welterweight to middleweight, yet no one wants any part of him.

Taylor didn't fade late against Froch. Taylor won almost every round until he ran out of gas..and got caught by a huge left hook if I'm not mistaken. Taylor needs more heart.
Williams is the one in a bad spot. Who is going to fight him? None of the elite welterweights will.

Running out of gas = Fading. I'd be suprised if Taylor does well in the tournament.
