Those of us who enjoyed Manny Pacquiao's victory on Saturday night over Miguel Cotto have no idea of the impact the Filipino has back home as he continues to climb the ladder of boxing history.

Pacquiao's win was also a nice pick up after horrible months of typhoons that killed 1,128:

"This is a glorious day for the Philippines especially after the typhoons," Tondo district chief Marcel de Asis.

Cerge Remonde, President Gloria Arroyo’s spokesman said, "Once again, Filipino grit and determination triumphed over great odds. The President joins the entire nation in rejoicing over the unprecedented victory of Manny Pacquiao over Miguel Cotto."

The Manila Times reports today that jailhouses were quiet and the Islamic revolution front took a day to rest, in order to watch Pacquiao fight on Sunday afternoon in the Philippines.

In strife-storn Mindanao, the military silenced its guns against al-Qaeda-linked Abu Sayyaf militants to watch from the trenches.

“In the [southern Philippine] headquarters, we set up a big screen for our soldiers to support our icon,” regional chief Maj. Gen. Benjamin Dolorfino said. “The ground units also had their satellite feed to boost troop morale.”

A spokesman for the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) fighting since 1978 watched Pacquiao's fight on television as it's entering peace talks with Manila.

Where I live boxing talk is very rare, but today, Manny talk replaced hockey talk. Floyd didn't even get a mention here after Marquez, obviously Manny's superior accomplishments, his class and demeanor, are that much more interesting.

Win or lose for Pacquiao, Filipinos are always together as a family, relatives and friends. They have family values like respecting the elders and moulding their children's character more than the western culture have. This is the ASIAN way, value their FAMILY more than everything else. If there are occassions, they always make it a point to attend these gatherings.

I was once a seafarer and everytime our vessel make a transit at the Panama Canal, Panamania personnel assisting our vessel at the canal would call us Filipino seafarers "Pacquiao" and how it made me feel proud. But that was 7 or so years ago when Freddie Roach took notice of the Pacman's potentials. I'm now a retired seafarer (1 number less from those who represent the more than 20percent of the world's total number of seafarers) and I can't imagine how proud these Filipino seafarers now for every countries they would be visiting and being called "Pacquiao". With exactly 100 countries I have visited during my seafaring days, I can only wish Pacquiao was already this even more famous and I would proudly wear a t-shirt that says "Team Pacquiao". But at least I've experienced how it is to be proud of Pacquiao while in Panama.
Congratulations Manny! You made us seafarers proud..... Attention on deck!

The first times I saw Pacquiao fight it wasn’t because I was a fan of his, but instead a fan of Barrera, Morales, and Marquez.. After seeing him defeat some of the great Mexican fighters I understood his potential and have been following his fights ever since..
Pacquiao has given us another epic performance.. The pride of the Philippines has now become the pride of BOXING..!!!

Can you imagine a former flyweight champion fighting a future cruiserweight or heavyweight champion in Paul Williams..??!!!!.....Now that is funny...!!!!...
Paul Williams is currently training at the 160 lb. limit....He wants a piece of the middleweight title....Then maybe attermpt to unify it.....The supermiddles 168 lbs. are certainly in line.....and one I'd like to see is a eventual SHOWDOWN with Chad Dawson.....Even Chad Dawson is interested at fighting at Supermiddleweight....!!!!...
I do not think that this talk of Paul Williams of coming back down to 147 lbs. is possible....Paul Williams like Thomas Hearns....who was also 6'1" or 6'2".....Could not stay at welterweight for too long....He had to move up....Keeping the weight off is the most difficult task for most tall fighters trying to stay in a lighter weight class....Thomas Hearns ended his career at Cruiserweight.....I see Paul Williams doing the same thing....

BOXING FANS! Sugar Shane mosley could could give it a good shot at 147lbs against manny and Floyd. Ever since he got his divorce he has the EYE OF THE TIGER especially against Margarito. Don't count Sugar Shane out yet! As far as HEAVYWEIGHTS are concerned, am still waiting for Erik Esh to make a comback. He is better known for his nickname BUTTER-BEAN.

july, I think you're correct about Williams, his days at 147 were numbered. As a welter, Paul had the potential to be in the same class as Floyd, Shane, Miguel and the likes ... but he didn't do nearly enough to justify comparison. Remember, it was less than two years ago when Paul lost his 0 against Quintana, who's not exactly a boxing juggernaut. After he avenged that loss, he proceeded to win 3, but all 3 were above welterweight. Paul still needs a few defining fights to vault him into the upper echelon of boxing, at any weight class.

Well, well, well, here is mayweather jr. now trying to get the attention of the promoters for him to get a shot @ Pacquiao. But i think the promoters will be wrong to match mayweather jr to pacquiao because as what pacquiaos trainer coach Freddie Roach said "what mayweather does is run run run during the fight" so where is the excitement there guys? Some say that it could be the worst and boring fight of all time. You know mayweather jr doesnt want to get hurt that is why he will always run during the fight. He should fight those weak boxers not the tough one. I want to call mayweather jr. the CHICKEN ROCK & RUN fighter of all time. What do you think guys.

Manny Pacquiao, boxing's best pound for pound fighter versus Floyd Mayweather, boxing's best mouth for mouth bragger.
Who's a faster puncher? Who's a faster runner? Who's got courage? Who's got a loud mouth? One will fight for legacy. One will fight for IRS. Let the fight begin to answer all these questions.

If Floyd fights pacman than he losses. If he runs and hides he might win. Both Floyd and Manny togerther can't match my favorite fighter of all time BUTTERBEAN when it comes to WEIGHT! It was close between BUTTERBEAN, IRAN BARKLEY, and MARK CASTANO as my all time favorite figher. Larry Holmes gets a honerable mention.

Rey, I dont think you wanna know what people think of your idea. Mayweather doesnt need to get the attention of promoters, pacquiao has been beating dudes for years to get mayweathers attention. He is trying to get a shot at pacquiao? I think it's the other way around lady....

Pacman-Mayweather. . . Mayweather is a big mouth pound for pound just like his big-mouthed father. The son will surely kiss the canvass if he wont run during the skirmishes with Pacman. Even Cotto could beat him the way he fights. He's no match for the true pound for king, Pacman. For you, Mr. Mayweather, Junior and senior alike, better shut up your un-pounded ego, you're no match to Pacman, the greatest of all.
