The swine flu has the world in freakout mode and for good reason, especially if regions aren't prepared to handle a serious outbreak. Manny Pacquiao is dying to get back home to the Philippines after nearly two months in the United States, and his Pinoy brothers and sisters are exploding at the seams ready to greet their national hero. A parade was supposed to happen on Friday but has now been postponed.
According to Philippine news services, Pacman was told by officials that he must delay his return, originally scheduled for Friday or upon arrival in Manila. He and his huge entourage will be quarantined for five to 10 days to ensure they haven't been exposed to the swine flu while in Southern Nevada and California:
Although there have been no confirmed cases of influenza A (H1N1) in the Philippines, Health Secretary Francisco Duque is concerned the boxer or his entourage could have picked up the virus while in the United States.
Not all Philippine officials are in agreement:
"(Duque) might as well shut down the entire airport if he is planning to quarantine Manny [Pacquiao]," said Environment Secretary Lito Atienza. "Right now, Manny Pacquiao is the healthiest Filipino. He defeated a tough British fighter in two rounds and I think he wouldn’t be able to do that if he’s sick."
Once the quarantine is over, further recommendations were made by Duque:
"The welcome greeters in Manila should be kept at a distance of at least one meter and no handshake or any form of social greetings like hugging or kissing. The team members who are not ill during the time of arrival should be encouraged to observe for any signs of illness for a period of five days and inform immediately the Department of Health if there are any symptoms," said Duque.
"(Pacquiao’s group) is not a small group and they come from different parts of the country."
There are also calls for all Philippine congressmen who attended the Ricky Hatton-Pacquiao fight in Las Vegas to be quarantined as well. There have been two reported deaths and 403 have been infected in the United States.
