Oscar talk

Oscar De La Hoya became the most popular boxer in the world because he was always willing to face the best opposition. There are few elite fighters who competed during De La Hoya's Hall of Fame career that he didn't face in the ring.

When all of them are done fighting, it may turn out that he faced seven men who went to the International Boxing Hall of Fame: Manny Pacquiao, Floyd Mayweather Jr., Bernard Hopkins, Shane Mosley (twice), Felix Trinidad, Julio Cesar Chavez (twice) and Pernell Whitaker.

Two other De La Hoya opponents, Fernando Vargas and Arturo Gatti, are Hall of Fame long shots, but at least have a chance.

If they make it, that will mean that 11 of his 45 fights, or 24.4 percent, were against Hall of Famers.

That's a remarkable achievment.

We want to know what you'll remember most about Oscar, who retired on Tuesday: The victories, the losses, the controversies. Share your thoughts about one of the most popular athletes in boxing history by commenting below.

i will remember exactly what you said Kevin, but i would also throw in the fact that he lost the majority of those big fights....its hard to forget that, but credit is given for at least taking those fights when most "elite" fighters today cherry pick their opponents....hopefully, through his influence and prominence as a promotional figure, he will begin to fill his fight cards, top to bottom, with great fights.

I have always been a DLH fan Win, Lose, or Draw. I think he kept people interested in boxing when there weren’t any other big attractions. He has only been positive for boxing by keeping it significant to the nonchalant boxing fans. They will miss him because there is no one to replace him, yet. Witch is the reason some might view him as Overrated, he attracted more than just the hardcore boxing fan. Others like myself will keep up with the Champions and the non-superstars, I will continue interested and current in the boxing world. Best wishes for The GOLDEN BOY, OSCAR DE LA HOYA.

Oscar De La Hoya will be missed in the ring!!!! I believe he made the right choice by retiring I wouldn’t want him to end up like other greats (exp: Ali) with any type of illness........ He had a lot of exciting fights and has done great things for the sport...... I know that now that he has completed his ring activity he will improve boxing with his promotional company GBP.... Most excellent of luck Oscar DLH and Thank you for the great times!!!

Some people who call themselves boxing fans really have no clue how great DLH was, he always fought the best possible opponent, he always puton the best show and was always good for the sport inside the ring and outside.
He is one of very few fighters that fought fighters who many people beleive to be P4P the best fighter at that time. Sugar shane, floyd, Bhop, Manny, Felix... just to name a few. People also need to realize he started his career at 130 and won championships all the way to 160. He beat everyone from Rueles, to Chaves, to Quartey to Vargas.
The sport of boxing with miss The Golden Boy and i think history will look back at him as a great fighter that single handedly carried boxing for a decade. Not since Mike Tyson has one person done that. And it will be a long time before anyone does that again.
Thanks Oscar for all the great memories in the ring...

DLH. The most overrated fighter of his generation. Bhop, Shane, Trinidad, Pacman.. He beat who he was supposed to, but when he fought guys that had good movement and fast hands in their prime, he lost. He also lost to Sturm but was given the decision. Great amateur, good pro.... End of story...

The only thing that upset me was DLH not coming out and talking about the loss to Manny, sooner. He hide from the public for 5 months. Good career, let's hope he puts together some good fight cards from top to bottom. No more garbage under cards. Best wishes.

mad respect for ODLH. i will admit that he did disappointment me for many of his biggest fights, especially in the last 3 rounds against Tito Trinidad , but he always fought the best and not every fighter can make that claim (Mayweather im looking in your direction).

By the way Oscar only lost to B. Hopkins...All the others he did not lose too. I've watched the fights over and over. Shane new he lost, Trinidad got whooped for 11 rounds, period...And yah that was Manny Pacquiao who Oscar could not beat. But its alright he did beat all of the best and thats all that matters. As for his trainer and son the Mayweathers. yah they were OK But I still don't have any respect for them at all. Maybe its there COCKY ness thats makes me feel the way I do about them. Oscar you will still be one of the BEST fighters of all times. So keep your head up and ENJOY life like always.

DLH was the most popular fighter of his generation, and he also posts an impressive resume. Those that claim he didn't win against better fighters should still recognize he fought the very best (eventually, if you fight the very best, you'll lose). My most positive memories of DLH was his wins over Sweet Pea, Vargas, Quartey and Mayorga. I'll always remember Oscar standing over the trash talking Ricardo Ali style. I was reluctantly impressed when he totally destroyed my man Gatti. The robbery in his rematch with Mosley was memorable and similarly I remember being both impressed (early rounds) and then vastly disappointed after he gave away the fight (last rounds) to Trinidad. My memory of his GBP losses vs Hopkins, Floyd and Pacman are mostly negative, because at this point he started giving me the impression that he was all about making the most money. All in all, he should be acknowledged for his positive influence on the sport of boxing (in desperate need for positives, especially considering how many fighters have recently tarnished the sport) and for arguably being one of the best boxers of our generation.

Mangler, consider this statistical fact ... from DLH first title fight (Bredahl) to his recent retirement, the combined record of his opposition (at the time of each fight) was an astounding 1,364-71. That has him fighting a top ranked fighter 34 times straight, all with a record (average) of 41-2. In reality, 9 out of his last 34 fights (27%) had him facing undefeated opposition. And 26 of his last 34 fights (77%) had him facing guys with 3 losses or less.

I too agree that the golden boy is a great boxer who always fought the tough fights the fights the fans wanted to see, we may never see a left hook like that again, I do understand how good he is but his legacy would have been better, lost close decisions and got robbed on 2 for sure. Mayweather and trinidad I thought he deserved atleast a draw. Raise em to the golden boy tonight a good champ and my favorite boxer thanx for all the great fight nights
my personal favorite is when he flatbacked trash talking vargas trav out

Every good fighter must come to that conclusion weather he has what it takes to continue his career, fighters like Sugar Ray,Duran,r Chavez,Tyson, James Toney, only the few can continue pass their prime. But you are all right that Boxing has been a up and down sport. as for me I have also given up watching the sport. it's not the same.

need1sniper.. He didn't lose to Pacman?? I thought he quit on his stool. He didn't lose to Mayweather?? Are you serious.?? Money made him look flat footed and pedestrian. Even Sturm beat him but they gave it to DLH.. Even Sugar Shane shined DLH shoes rather easily..

Floyd didn't look all that great against DLH, he did very little damage, just enough to win. It was a very boring fight and thankfully no rematch took place (I wouldn't have paid PPV money the second time around). Pacman destroyed Oscar with relative ease, but so what, Manny has an impressive list of fighters he's destroyed. Perhaps Floyd will be on his list someday soon?

He always fought the best, his fights were always entertaining and compelling. His win over Whitaker was too close to call, could have gone either way. He showed great determination vs Quartley & Vargas, but was too cautious vs Trinidad & Mayweather. Have always been a fan of DLH for the excitement he brings to boxing. His early fights were proof he was for real, he was very punishing vs Gonzales, Ruelas, Hernandez, and Chavez. I remember how fast he blew out Troy Dorsey and thinking he was going to be a star for sure. Moving up in weight to fight Hopkins was his only bad career move, but aside from that he has every reason to be proud of his accomplishments.

to all who view oscar as a chump, that took all comers, i don't believe i see your name on neon lights, give praise where praise is due and move on. felix, he knew he lost, mosley, he knew he lost, yes he lost where it was obvious, but be realistic, only one can judge, and it certainly is not you or i. unless, you have walked in his shoes, don't say he only fought chumps, oscar, you were a true champion. enjoy your family, retirement, and may god bless you and your family.
