Lopez preps for biggest challenge

Recently, highly regarded boxing analyst and trainer Teddy Atlas noted that the number of quality punchers in the sport has diminished greatly or completely disappeared.

It's hard to deny, though, that Juan Manuel Lopez is, pound-for-pound, one of the hardest hitters in the game.

He holds an unofficial record for most first-round knockouts in a row in world title fights, having scored consecutive kayos in the first round over Daniel Ponce de Leon, Cesar Figueroa and Sergio Manuel Medina.

The WBO super bantamweight champion, Lopez, 25, has 22 knockouts in his 24 professional fights and has ended 17 of his 24 bouts in three rounds or less.

He'll face his toughest challenge on Saturday, when he defends his title against veteran Gerry Penalosa on an HBO Boxing After Dark card in Bayamon, Puerto Rico.

"I don't think all my fights are going to be like my last few fights have been and I know there are going to be some tough fights in there," Lopez said. "But I know this: I hurt guys even with the 16-ounce gloves on in the gym. I know I have the power to do what I need to do in there."

A left-hander, Lopez has a devastating straight left that he delivers with speed and accuracy. He also has a pretty fair right hook, which he's worked to make into a weapon for him.

Boxing, though, isn't all about offense. Lopez knows that one day, there will be someone who stands in front of him and trades. He has to be able to take the big shots that are inevitably going to come in return.

His countryman, Felix Trinidad, became beloved on the island for his ability to pull himself up off the canvas and register a knockout. Lopez believes he has similar capabilities.

"Sooner or later, one of those kinds of fights is going to come around and I know there's a chance I could go down," he said. "I'm not thinking about that, but it's a fact in this sport if you fight that way. If I go down, I just have to get back up and keep fighting, like Tito did."

This is exactly what the boxing blog needs, particular insight on a flourishing fighter!!!!! Along with facts predictions and information that might have just been ignored if not brought up by a real boxing expert!!!!! The bantamweight picture is too often ignored just like all the lower weight divisions, but alot of enormous talent comes out of them..... easy example the current P4P Champ Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao!!!!
GREAT JOB Kevin Iole!!! Thank you!!!!!

JML is very good fighter, and has devastating left straight.
but veteran Gerry has fought all kind of war, all types of opponent.
he's old, but aged like a wine... and still a champion
after the triumph of viloria and donaire, we hope gerry will bring the Philippine Flag up there on more time.
    Go Gerry!

Gerry will win! He hasn't been down in all his fights no matter how impossible the situation is. He has faced all of the best opponents in his entire career. JML is a strong fighter, but lacks experience. Gerry has faced many boxers of that caliber during his prime and triumphed!
Together with every Filipino around the globe, we shout, "Go Gerry!"

Don't under estimate the capabilities of the filipino fighters as what you did when manny fought hoya.

I've only seen Lopez fight once, when he destroyed a dispirited Medina, so it's a bit early to tell, but he looks to very tough, very fast and powerful. I luv the lighter divisions, so much potential talent ...

My heart is for Gerry Peñalosa but my pocket is for Juan Manuel Lopez. Gerry's losses were due to his inability to chase and catch his Korean opponents. JML should learn from this; however, if he trades punches with Gerry -- and Gerry can take punches, he will absorb his first loss. It may quite ugly, but the style that will beat Peñolosa is jab, jab, straight, run, jab, jab, straight, run, and hope that the straights will hit the mark. Nonetheless, my money goes for JML because of his youth and leg power which Gerry no longer has.

Mr. Iole. It is refreshing to see some cyber ink on the game of Boxing without the snide remarks and UFC bias. Keep em coming. There are people obviously who still enjoy the sport...
I love all the Phiippine pride showing up on the blogs. I have been to Cebu... Beautiful place, beautiful women.....
BUT, I am going with JML in this one. Gerry may have an iron chin, but JML is gonna crack it. Cant wait to see this fight.
Mangler, can you believe it?? An actual Boxing Blog about some talented fighters.. It feels like some kind of holiday on Yahoo Sports. No whiny Cofield is a breath of fresh air. Peace out...

I saw the Medina fight and the Ponce de Leon fight. The kids looks real good. Solid skills and nice power to go along with it. I give Gerry respect to the highest degree but I think this one might end between rounds 6-8

I expect Juanma to win this fight in a very convincing fashion. Otherwise, a UD win proves nothing for Juanma.

I like Gerry, but I think the youth of JML will be a factor in this fight. Im looking for JML stoppage of Gerry in the late rounds.

Yeah Mangler. I haven't seen Blain so it will be nice to see if he can shine some shoes.
SouthCal. i would but someone took it. I cant get it back.. I do agree some more blogs would be nice, but I dont want to push my luck. There are a lot of good fights that get no coverage. Even FNF on espn has some goodies now and then. But no ink on those... Good to see the boxing fans and this sport will never die !!!!! Peace out......

I concur with MR.MVP. Virtuous blog!
I believe Juan Manuel Lopez has the advantage in this fight. He should be able to display his punching power once again. He should be capable of winning by the 9th round. Gerry will definitely be one of his toughest opponents yet, but the Puerto Rican should conquer.

The fight on Saturday between Juanma and Gerry should be a high-quality match.... I don’t like to underestimate anyone, however age is not in favor of Gerry!!!!
Taylor vs Froch, Taylor should win, but he needs to focus.... Not only to win this WBC belt, but to gain some fascination from those who have disregarded him.... He has a lot of potential and he can’t let the losses to Pavlik throw him off track!!!! This should be good for him!!! If he wins???

I go for jerry to win this fight against JML....yES jerry is older than juan but in terms of experience it is an advantage to jerry.....Try to recall our memories of what happen in Juan Manuel Marquez against Juan Diaz....DID YOU SEE HOW THE VETERAN PUNISH THE YOUNG......iT ight be that JML WILL be tired of punching Jerry without hitting or hurting jerry.......All I can say is Jerry Peñalosa would win the fight in the late rounds........Go Jerry....go.......
