Cris Arreola broke down in the ring after the fight. He cried uncontrollably after not being able to catch a Vitali Klitschko, 6-foot-7, 252-pound heavyweight for 10 rounds. Klitschko, with his hands down for most of the fight, put on a show nailing Arreola throughout with six and seven unanswered punches at a time. By the end of the tenth, the big Russian was leading 10-0 and 9-1 on most cards, and had outlanded Arreola 301-86. Arreola's trainer Henry Ramirez told referee John Schorle that was it. Klitschko, 38, retains his WBC heavyweight title with a thudding technical knockout victory over Arreola at Staples Center.

"He was taking too much punishment," Ramirez told the L.A. Times. "Arreola was irate. It was not an easy decision, but we had discussed it, and I had to do it."

Arreola, weeping for minutes after the fight, could barely pull it together to speak with HBO announcer Larry Merchant:

"I couldn't get to him," said a sniffling Arreola (27-1, 24 KOs). "He ran when he was supposed to. Whatever I did he found a way to counteract that."

Klitschko (38-2, 37 KOs) was super confident from the start holding his left hand by his side. Arreola stood in front of the big guy the entire fight and got nailed by three and four-punch combinations. When it wasn't three or four punches, Klitschko was masterful pcking apart Arreola with two-punch combos and then sliding to his left or right. Arreola couldn't pull the trigger after getting drilled or would simply swing and miss.

"I don't know [what happened] man. I worked my ass off. [Expletive]!," said Arreola. "Vitali is a strong [expletive]. He hit hit hard."

The 28-year-old from just outside L.A., in Riverside, was distraught about the fact that his corner threw in the towel:

"That's never in me. I didn’t want to quit. I knew he was [expletive] me up. I'm sorry guys."

Schorle had no choice. By the middle of the fight, Klitschko's confidence soared as held both hands at his side and landed almost everything he threw. He mixed together clubbing lead left hooks, straight rights and wicked uppercuts to puff up Arreola's face.

Arreola's best rounds were No. 4 and 8. Yahoo! Sports' writers on the scene in Los Angeles, Kevin Iole and Martin Rogers, each had it 89-82 for Klitschko. I had it a clean sweep for Klitschko. Klitschko led 99-91 on the cards of Anek Hongtongkam and Ken Morita, and Guido Cavalieri had it 100-89.

The final punchstats illustrated just how dominant Klitschko was. He outlanded Arreola by 215 and threw 471 more shots. He also landed 151 power punches (53-percent) to just 24 for Arreola. "Dr. Ironfist" still looked very fresh even after throwing 802 punches.

It's difficult to see what's on the horizon for Vitali and his brother Wladimir (53-3, 47 KOs), who holds the other major heavyweight titles. The brothers have been resistant to the talk that they fight each other. Who else is out there? Arreola may have been the last American heavyweight for a while who can challenge the massive Russians.

Unfortunately, that warrior spirit was all drained at the end with Cris totally upset and emotional.

It was said before the fight by Larry Merchant that Arreola was the best U.S. prospect since Riddick Bowe. I applaud Arreola's guts but he had very little to offer offensively. The first thing you need to compete with Vitali Klitchko is a good jab. Chris just stood in front of Vitali all night and never got off first. It really shows what a shambles the heavyweight division has become. A prime Riddick Bowe with his great jab would have given Vitali a lot of trouble. Yes the Klitchko's are dominate right now but their is a total lack of talent right now in the division.

The fat boy lost. What a bum. I just won a big bet. Vitalis 37 wins and 36 KO, is nothing to joke about. There is a reason. The fat boy 24-0 is now blemish. Because his been knocking out opponents, that he can just run over Vitali? It could have been better even at 15 wins- 0 loss, if he is at level 2 not level 1. What the fat boy needs is a better " TRAINER ", that can mold him to be a 1st class heavybomber not a 1st class heavybummer. Its not like Mike tyson at 5' 7"- 5' 11", who is fast and iron fist hands. Your the smaller boxer, fight inside. Not fight outside, while the taller and bigger boxer is doing so. He has no intelligence, same w/ his corner. Thats luck of experience. Why Wladimir Klinckso has Stewart on his corner? Why is he the champion? Mike Tyson has an experieced corner. When he did not have that corner? He lost by KO, then spiral downwards. Same thing w/ Evander Holyfield. You have to be a special or gifted boxer, even w/ a lousy corner to pull wins. Sorry to the fat boy, maybe when he reaches 30 wins. I wish the next 5 matches, will gain him experience. Not just to be a champ, but to stay there in a long haul.

Being a prospect means nothing. Look at all the HBO prospects this year. They lost. The only one left is Andre Ward, who wants to be w/ the big boys at supermiddleweight tournament. It does not mean, his a big boy too. A boxer must be extraordinary, to defeat a higher level boxer. Fat boy got owned. The game plan was all wrong. Look at all the American great heavyweights. They are chiseled, and fit. Even big George. His not called Big George for nothing. He was a monster. The fat boy said his a fighter not a body builder. What a bummer. The weights in the gymn translates to arms and hands strenght if you do it right. All I can say eat more beans, tortillas and halapenos. That might work. Crying won't help. He already lost, when he agreed to fight Vitali. It was a long shot.

Who cares if the guy cried after the fight? at least he didn't run from the ring like some supposed badass ufc fighters that put out books called, got fight........
klitschko is crafty and technically sound, but brings no panache or excitement to the hw division. i can admire his game, but will be glad when some new blood comes into that division that is hopefully more engaging and exciting to watch. i think he also benefits from a weak overall hw division at the moment. is he that good? or is his competition not that good?

Quite a study in contrast - Vitali all smiles whereas Cris was 'downtrodden'. One loss out of 15 is not so bad at all though, and just like what Julyfirehorse says, Cris could always come back and revive the warrior spirit in him.

The Klitschkos may very well be the last of their kind, standing tall at 6" short of 7 ft. Unless a "Rocky" of a boxer comes around, both brothers may never see their fall down ! Talk about unification.... it will NEVER happen... this is not Tennis or Golf.

You can laugh all you want about Arreola but he didnt end up on the mat and took some big shots which would have knocked out 99% of the fighters in the heavyweight division. I still think they should have given him a couple more fights before throwing him with Klitschko. I think he will still be a heavyweight champion soon and he definitely has a champions heart and he has new Italian American fan who will be rooting for him.

Arreola should be proud of what he has accomplished. His loss to Klitschko was his first, out of 27, so that should not stop him from getting back up.

Arreola never had a chance, and I knew it. In short, no discipline. He was out of shape and is slow.
Seriously, only Eddie Chambers has a shot to be the next American heavyweight champion. Chambers can actually box.
El Guapo never had a chance. Its boxing not brawling.

Vitali Klitschko is indeed the best fighter around. He is in great condition, technically sound and one bad dude. He would kick Riddick Bowe's but all over the place. Bowe wouldn't stand a chance against Klitschko. Everyone can whine and cry about the only reason Klitschko is number one is because of a lack of talent. Well, maybe there was a lack of talent when Bowe was champ. Give the man credit where credit is due. The man is 6-7, 252lbs and not hardly an ounce of fat on him. He's quick , fast and smart.

Julyfh... Why pitting Klitschko vs. Klitschko will never happen? The Williams sisters can do it in Tennis because there's no physical infliction against each other, only the intangible - PRIDE, with a li'l bit of mental, I guess. But knowing you, I know you'll quip - which hurting is better, physical or mental?? And that's where the argument starts. Physical as everybody knows is temporary, whereas, mental could have more long-lasting effects, even up to the point where the threshold to insanity shows up. That said, it seems mental could cause more hurt than the physical, and yet, here I am saying, physical violence (as in boxing) has no room for siblings. Nonetheless, I guess we could say, it's NOT ETHICAL in boxing for brothers to fight each other. I'm sure there's more to it than that, and I will that to you and our friends to pitch their 2-cents worth.

In retrospect, Chris did relatively well. I figured he had a punchers chance, but never a boxers chance. I had him getting knocked out under 6 rounds. Obviously, he's not in the same league skill or physical wise as the K'Bros, but he has just as much heart, or more, but unfortunately, heart can only take you so far. From the get-go, I thought this fight was all wrong for Chris at this point in his career. He should have gotten into better shape and developed his skills against improving competition - before getting into the ring with the best.

I'm not satisfy to put mayweather at the top of boxing. Because we can see marquez is smaller than floyd. He convince me if he fight in upper class of welterweigh not in lower weigh. It's not right to put him in #1 rank of boxing. How the others boxer, they start in nothing ? I believe that is not right to vote him to become #1 boxer. hope u can Read this my message of others fans of boxing.

Neal ros.. you really cant compare klitschko to bowe. first of all, your argument holds no water because the two will never face each other when they are both in their prime. second, bowe was fighting incredible fights against holyfield, and golotta, who probably would of given klitschko a good fight in his prime. it is a lack of competition that makes the quitschkos great for now. when bowe was fighting, there were many a more dangerous hw fighter than there is in the klitschko era. got lennox lewis?? another fighter who in his prime would of shined klitschko shoes. and we all know wlad is a quitter. he was winning a fight unanimously and quit coz his shoulder hurt.. ahhhhhh. poor baby.. thus the moniker, the quitschkos... oh, and ufc is for repressed homosexuals. just think, you can mount your opponent and beat him with all that repressed anger. boxing rules fanboys.

Seriously..a prime Bowe would have gave either brother pure hell. A prime Holyfield would've given them hell as well..thing is though..we'll never know. Arreola had the gameplan to get inside but just couldn't do it. The brothers are pretty easy to beat it's just that there's no one out there with the skills and talent to put that gameplan to use. Arreola put on a game effort though true warrior..His corner...while they did the right thing to protect him..took away a fighters pride by stopping the fight. That's what I think he was crying about.
