It turned out that UFC brought a pistol to its Sept. 19 pay-per-view war with boxing. In the first head-to-head pay-per-view battle of the year, the Floyd Mayweather Jr. fight appears to have crushed UFC 103. According to HBO, Mayweather lost zero sizzle in spite of taking 21 months off:

The one million buy total represents the highest performing boxing pay-per-view event in 2009 and generated $52 million in pay-per-view revenue. The million buys include 525,000 from cable homes and 475,000 from satellite homes. It is only the fifth time in boxing pay-per-view history that a non-heavyweight event has attained the one million buy mark. [Mayweather] has now participated in two events that have reached the one million buy mark.

HBO PPV chief Mark Taffet was fired up:

"Sept. 19 was an event that connected with sports fans across the country. Floyd Mayweather has clearly reinforced his standing as a top attraction and fans are excited about his return to the sport."

Yahoo! Sports Kevin Iole told Cagewriter that his sources said UFC 103 finished in the 450,000 range. The UFC does not release its PPV buy statistics.

His next fight will be 999,999 (1 less) unless he fights Paul Williams, Miguel Cotto, or Sugar Shane. Im tired of watch Floyd dance all night. I can watch Dancing With The Stars on T.V. FOR FREE

The UFC did an estimated 450k PPV's with one of the worst cards it has had this year.

Didnt Dana vow that Mayweather-Marquez would not beat a UFC PPV. Like I said, no wonder the UFC never releases its ACTUAL numbers. One could reason that its a small number and is why they pay their fighters crap. Money May could have paid that entire 103 card with his 2 pound fine. And these numbers are not even counting the closed circuit revenue at movie theaters etc that were estimated to be 70 percent full at 15 bucks a head. Boxing is dead/dying?? pssh.

I don't care 'bout PPV figures but I think it was one superb boring boxing match. It was not an explosive fight that I expected it would so it can never be one of greatest boxing I have seen.

Hopkins and Jones Jr announced by Richard Schaefer of GB Promotions for 1st quarter of 2010. But RJJ has to win his next fight for it to happen. 50/50 split but if there is a KO then the winner gets 60 and loser 40. I know i know, way overdue and Jones is a shell of his former self but it should be fun and at least it will get one of them to shut up.

If that 1 million PPV is true, then 1 million households were also disappoined by the outcome of the fight. With all the advantages you could imagine including a blatant violation of the weight limit, Mayweather couldn't even finish an explosive one. He's used to taking it easy and people are clamoring for more. Those numbers if true, went up because of curiosity, (big vs. small) not because of Mayweather.

I saw the fight but up to 6rh round only. I turned it off because I was deeply BORED with the fight quality from Mayweather. It was as to be expected, more like the run-run, jab-jab, restrain Marquez with one hand while punching with the other, etcetera, etc. I tell you, am I glad I didn't buy the ppv. I wasn't thrilled. In fact , I was calmly sitting in our sofa, unamused and devoid of emotions. When I watched Pacquiao's fight, I feel I was in the ring and would stand up and motion everytime I see something amusing.

I seriously think Yahoo's decision to move Mayweather to the top of the pound4pound rankings is a joke. Can they be serious because he beat a featherweight slowed down because he was carrying twenty extra pounds. Will you buy Mayweather-Chris John next or how about some swamp land in Florida. Not even the Hype machine at HBO believes this!
We can't find out if Mayweather is even the top welterweight, how can we even get the idea he best P4P if he's not even the best at his own weight!
Quit buying the hype and realize that Mayweather is an illusion behind good salesmen!

What I love about what boxing is doing is that not EVERY SINGLE significant event is a PPV. Why? I have been watching really good Boxing on regular HBO all year. I only want to spend on the top notch fighters. That is how all fights should be. UFC is UFC, if you want to shell out money for ever single one. That is your choice. I would rather pay for the quality more than the quantity. I'll give Money a pass on this one, he has been out for 2 years. But he needs another good name to sell. If you want to see a GREAT fight it will be against Mosley. Mosley can catch Money and is stronger. If you want to get really really exited......buy a PPV that will not be all that great it will be against Manny. Too small, too sloppy and not enough power. GREAT boxing on regular showtime too!!!!! I hate that Top Rank has PPV each and every time!!! Latin fury 99 or whatever...he charges you to watch prospects! Stop Bob!

Cofield, what are you doing?? dana will ban you from the ufc pressers. why doesn't the ufc disclose their ppv numbers?? i guess boxing is not dead. where is your 80 year old wino ppv salesman who says bars only want to order ufc events eh cofield??
great boxing skill shown by mayweather. his defense is second to none, and he has a very underrated left hook. it was refreshing to see two guys handle their business on their feet. no need to twist your opponents arm, and lay on top of him for a full mount. there has been great free boxing cards on espn, hbo and showtime. cofield, go back to the ufc site. we all know your heart isn't in boxing. your posts on here every six months or so are not appreciated.

Amazing how many people say this fight was boring. For those who watched..real fans know they witnessed a boxing masterpiece. Floyd didn't dance around the ring. He landed his jab and threw 3 to 4 punch combinations that were so fast Marquez didn't know what hit him. This fight had nothing to do with size Marquez just couldn't hit Floyd. Don't make no excuses for Marquez. He called out Floyd after he beat Diaz. He called out a welterweight trying to follow the foot steps of Pacman. Give Floyd his respect. I have no problem with him being #1 p4p but if it were my rankings it would be #1 Cotto #2 Mayweather #3 Pacquiao.

A joke? This is a guy who won 6 titles in across 5 weight classes. This is a guy who is undefeated and is a boxing expert in the ring. Superior defense. What you saw was boxing at it's finest. If it was boring to you then you're not a true fan of the sport. Real boxing fans appreciate what they saw. You can't fault a man because he has some of the best defense we've seen in years. The real joke is that Cotto should be #1 as he fought stiffer competition then Mayweather and Pacquaio and he has beaten them at that. Mayweather should be #2 because he is the best boxer out there and has beaten the men he's faced and made them look sub par. Pacquaio should be #3 for his style and beating opponents in decisive fashion but De La Hoya was far past his prime and he had trouble with Forbes, Hatton was done after Mayweather, and Diaz was average.

The sudeen rise to the top by Mayweather is really a JOKE! Imagine, just 1 fight and boom he's way up there. I wouldn't mind hiim as #1 unless he had a fight with Pacquiao (#1 for the last 18 months). Or if Cotto wins over Pacquiao, Mayweather has to beat him for the #1. A lot of fans anticipate a Pacquiao-Mayweather fight, so until then, Mayweather's P4P king title is very much debatable!!!!!
