It's been a disappointing year for boxing attendance and pay-per-view buys. The most recent big fight in November, Joe Calzaghe-Roy Jones Jr., did only 225,000 buys falling way short of the projections of 500,000. Much of the blame for the poors numbers in 2008 can be put on the sagging U.S. economy and some of it is because of poor promotion and cards that lack depth. But HBO figures that it has a slam dunk in the Oscar De La Hoya-Manny Pacquiao fight this weekend.  Pacman promoter Bob Arum disagrees slightly telling the N.Y. Post that the fight may be priced too high at $54.95:

If he would have known how bad the economy was going to tank after announcing De La Hoya-Pacquiao last October he would have suggested lowering the pay-per-view price to $49.95, but still expects to do good business. "I've been very satisfied with ticket sales and I'm sure we're going to be very, very satisfied with pay-per-view sales." Arum said.

Meanwhile, HBO PPV chief Mark Taffet is oozing with confidence:

"In 18 PPV fights, Oscar has brought in $626 million, on 12.8 million buys," he said. "This could be up there with the Mayweather fight."

That would be impressive considering the DLH-Floyd Jr. fight did 2.4 million buys. More realistic projections have the fight doing around 750,000.

Give Golden Boy Promotions some credit for creativity. It's mixing in the fight sponsors to offer deals that can defer the cost of the pay-per-view.

"This is the first time we've had rebates like this," said Mark Taffet, HBO's pay-per-view chief. "There's no doubt we need to be more sensitive than ever to value, and we believe De La Hoya-Pacquiao provides it with a capital V."

If fans buy a 12-pack of Tecate and Coke's Full Throttle energy drink they receive rebates that cut down on the cost of the PPV significantly.

The problem that I could say is that some of the PPV fights are lousy fights and should not be PPV considering the cost too. Its a case of feasibility study and management. The public knows more about boxing than the promoters and HBO. There is 100 M strong than can pay $20, than only 1-2M to pay $50 or more or not even? Look on the case of the 3 fights of Vasquez/Marquez. Maybe more than 500M worldwide saw the fight, and it was amazing, excellent. This is a standard figth for PPV. Those are the fights that will put back boxing to its greatness. Not PPVs Calzaghe/Jones/Hopkins etc.. If HBO folds, there is Showtime, then ESPN or go back to the glory days ABC "the thrill of Victory and the Agony of defeat".

I for one think it is to expensive to purchase. The fight in my opinion will be a good one to see but not for that price. I think I will catch it at a bar and grill joint with a couple of friends and I think the cover will only be 10 bucks. Better then 54.99 thats for sure!

A big name Boxer should fight one fight on free tv and then one fight on ppv to grow his fan base!

Even a big name fighter (not even ODLH with his resources and business acumen) cannot swing the bucks needed to set up a 'free' TV promotion without unacceptable personal financial risk. The popularity of boxing as a mass market (eyeballs sponsors will pay for) for a big time big name fight on free TV just cannot compete with PPV economics. There is no 'League' that can take those kind of losses in a long term plan for growing a fan base.

I say make it 39.99 and get over a million buys and and make 40 million plus!
not bad and plus you get more people to watch and get the sport to be at the top where it belongs.
Also free TV for some of these big fights would put a lot more interest in boxing and create new fans for life.
Any way should be a good fight toe to toe for at least 5 rounds then I think Oscar will take over.

The fight will be toe to toe if the golden boy will not run and hit. He should prove to the world that the Mexican boxer can't run.

I don't expect a toe-to-toe brawl. De La Hoya won't fight toe-to-toe and will avoid a brawl. Pacquiao is a crafty fighter who will use his quickness. Pacquiao doesn't have the power to score a knockout. He will try to win in points. Both fighters will be laughing their way to the bank with their stature intact.

I doubt DLH is going to be backing up in this fight. Pacquiao won't be able to hurt him, and if DLH lands his left hook, he's knocking Pacman out.

This fight is a farce, and to ask fans to pay $55 to see it at Christmas time...hopefully this will be a wake up call to Oscar and his crew. You would have gotten alot more respect (and PPV buys) if you had opted to fight Margarito (as Mosley is) or even Cotto...even if you lost...than you ever will running around the US and telling us how great a fighter this tiny man is. This whole thing looks silly, makes you look like a coward, and to hear you promote it as the Dream Match it is not is almost as offensive as your flip flopping from being American to Mexican..to American...as the situation calls for it.

If the fight would cost 29.99, they would triple the total number of request and cash in more. But Oscar's greed won't let this happen. I guess some fighters see only a few trees instead of the whole forest...

No way will I pay almost $60 to watch Oscar, AND I have the money to do it! I'd rather watch a good MMA card rather than The Golden Boy. I watched Felix Strum beat him a few years back and the wonderful boxing judges gave it to Oscar. What a joke! Unless someone gets ko'd in boxing you never know who the winner will be, and Oscar has so much money in the business of boxing now I don't believe for one minute that judges will call a close fight for him and ruin one of the few draws in boxing - it just won't happen and the sport is quickly becoming a joke.

I would say make boxing available not only to the boxing fans but also to the general public by lowering the PPV price, let say $35. I believe millions of people including those who were not watching boxing before would like to watch it. And, for God's sake, promoters, please, don't be so greedy in terms of how much you will earn. Greed is the silent assassin that can knock downt the popularity of boxing industry in this country. The current financial crisis that the world has been facing right now is caused by human greed as some economic analysts have strongly said.

Cyrus, it will be enetrtainment, although, it is way too expensive, Somebody say that it will involve 3 nations, Mexico, USA and the Phillipines, in my peronal opinion, A lot of Mexicans hate DLH, so we will be cheering for Pacquiao, He's more like a people person than DLH, plus he fight more like a Mexican. I still think is a mismatch, This fight sucks!, I won't watch it, I will do something more productive, like speniding quality time with my family
    Cheers

Mismatch, to whose favor? Unfortunately, you do not like Dela Hoya as a Mexican and prefer a Filipino who you believe, fights like a Mexican. Well, you better watch it anyway, coz you may watch it anyway someday. Whatever is wrong in the promotion, the media hype and the match up, I think it is still worth watching for entertainment sake, the fact it was realized. I am a Filipino, and I will watch just for the sake of sports and entertainment, but I don't link it with nationalism, because it is a false way of inculcating nationalism.
** Work and home-based & developed technology that would allow the nation to compete and become self-reliant must be the patriotic approach.

About 15 years ago, in Mexico, Julio Cesar Chavez was what Pacquiao was today in the Philipines, we tought he was invincible, I remember that a Gym owner rented his gym with big screens for people to watch him, the arena was sold out. after that it was chaos, traffic, vandalism, etc.
When Chavez fought Whitaker, it looked pretty bad for him, I saw him loosing the fight, he was awarded a draw. I started to suspect credibility in Boxing, This is just my personal opinion, but the fight with Marquez, I saw the same as Chavez with Whitaker, it was pretty obvious who won that fight. Filipinos are the Mexicans 15 years ago. during that period, violence escalated, prices went up, the peso lost 50 % power against the US dollar, but who care, we were happy with our Idol.
Then came Frankie Randal, put Chavez for the first time in the ground, That was his first loss in over 85 fights, Randal was not the favorite. So they fought back again in 1995, Chavez was cut at the head and the judges went to the score cards, Chavez again was awarded with a win.
I see a lot of similarities between the way Pacquiao fights and Chavez, I see the same with the fans and I also see the same circus.
I am just hoping no vandalism in Filipines if Pacquiao wins or loses, this is just a fight and should be seen as entertainment.
By the way, Chavez, Margarito, Chavez Jr. and many more mexican boxing legends, are cheering for Pacquiao, that must have hurt DLH
