Filipino media behind their man

It'll be interesting to see how many Filipino media members will be able to contain themselves on press row during the Manny Pacquiao-Oscar De La Hoya fight on Saturday night. If Pacman pulls off the upset, will more than a few stand and applaud? Pacquiao hass the strongest nationalistic following of any athlete in the world. And papers like The Philippine Daily Inquirer aren't hiding their rooting interest.

In the picture above, The Pacquiao Files features a scroll of well-wishers and several sponsors supporting the Pacquiao effort. It's no different in some British tabloids that cover Ricky Hatton. And there have been several sightings this year where American "media" members jumped out of their press row seats in support of a victorious fighter.

An east coast FM deejay seated in the Atlantic City Boardwalk Hall media section was spotted making bets on Bernard Hopkins with the Pavlik fans in attendance. Throw in a beer or two for good measure, and the winning radio personality lost his mind on press row when BHop secured the easy win. There was also a prominent boxing/MMA writer who couldn't contain himself, rising to his feet at UFC 87 when Kenny Florian's hand was raised.

In my lifetime there has been a lot of history in my country. The People Power that exiled a dictator of 20yrs, First woman President, Tourism flourish, unforgetable Earthquake, The end of US controlled bases of 60yrs, Volcano eruption, Kidnapped tourist, War, Corruption and Economic Crisis and MANNY PACQUIAO. For once in a lifetime, I can call on sick and tune in my 60" HDTV to find some tranquility, harmony and PRIDE for the last time. Most us here in the US got the same feeling, its culture, its tradition, its in the blood. For once a Philippine flag is shown around the world in a big stage. Just imagine a Mexican flag waved in a country who forced them to sell and give up a lot of territorial and ancestral land, after a century being insulted and ridiculed. Others back home have to walk a mile or 2, from the mountains to the nearest town just to watch the fight. Not to watch win, but watch how he fights. And it brings back centuries of misgiving with the Spanish and American exploits.
Manny Pacquiao knows his heart is with us and ours with him. An impressive showing is what we want. A victory against Oscar is taking away our breaths and a peeble stone under our heels.

Nothing wrong with pride in your nation and supporting your countryman. So far as "being insulted and ridiculed. " is concerned, anybody who has spent any time in the PI knows that the rough and tumble in the media there has plenty of self directed homegrown insults.

I'm not sure exactly what Steve is trying to say. Is he saying that having pride and supporting someone a bad thing?
But to make one thing sure, I'll be rooting for my countryman PACQUIAO this Saturday night. He's younger, faster, fitter AND stronger! I even found a party up at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno, NV where they're going to be having a big VIP party showing of the fight. And Filipinos are going to represent!! Got a package of $275 for a nice room with all some other extras too.

Filipinos are proud of Pacquiao. Will proudly support and cheer Pacquiao. And will party with Pacquiao when he KOs De La Hoya on the 2nd round!!! = )

F....k that, is just a boxing match, a win from either one of them will not make this world better, In Mexico we do not care, but even if we care. I would say that Julio is our best bet. In Mexico a lot of peopple are betting for Pacquiao because he fights more like a Mexican, DLH is hated all over Mexico. We are not like the Filipinos, we have bigger problems to think about one hero.
My predidtions are DLH by knock out, but I would love to see Pacquiao winning, for him only, I can see a lot of insults from Filipinos and a lot racial related nsults, like the Mexicutioner, I have not been beat by him or other Filipino people, but, as I said it does not mean anything who wins, what comes after is what is going to bother me

Pareng Banana_Split...I like how you exude with pride about being a Filipino despite our seeming aweful history as an exploited race, however, I can't see how Pacquiao's boxing exploits can make a difference. I appreciate and admire Pacquiao's boxing prowess and stellar accomplishment as a prizefighter, but he just remains a sportsman and a prizefighter utmost who is good in making money for himself. And even if he makes boxing popular for Filipinos and open opportunities for a dozen Filipinos - that is all at best. Maybe the best way to improve a country is not through boxing technology but industrial technology which our country does not have - so we can produce our own cars, ships and airplanes...I don't know how you will react - ha, ha, ha. Don't punch from a distance or let your fist pop out of the my laptop monitor... Maybe I am just bored and got excited by your comment. History & boxing - does it mix in improving a country?

$ 54 to watch it, I will spend time with my family and take them to a nice restaurant, I will also teach my daughter to read. I may sound ridiculous, but I hate circus, I love to watch boxing but in open T.V. regardless of race, social status and color.
    Good boxers
    Juan Manuel Lopez
Pacquiao, (too pricy to watch), mexicans love him because of his style
    Israel Vazquez
Vic Darchinyan (Even that it has a big mouth and I hate him)
Nonito Donaire (Underrated, I think he has better skills than Pacquiao)
    Juan Diaz
    Nate Campbell
    Paul Williams
    Miguel Cotto
    Antonio Margarito
Joe Calzaghe ( Extremely good, I hate him because of the way he made fun of Jones)

Cyrus my friend. I'm not compairing. Its something for once, to cheer about and be proud off. We both know, we doubt this dream match. Despite Oscars advantages, we something to be proud that is truly ours.
    Its just something to cheer.

Pareng ...'split, i am just glad to read your comments and even dare you to react. But at times you sound like a historian and an educator. Are you into a post-graduate studies there? Anyway it's nice to just one day see your name and know you are the Filipino friend from the land I can only dream of...No do not moralize - meaning I really can not make it to your adopted land.
    * Well, I know all Filipinos are rooting for Pacquiao, however, I believe he has to be superb and lucky to win. But win or loss, I know he will make a good account of himself. Actually just nervous, meaning when it is a tough fight I cannot make a definite guess. Coz I want him to win, but this is a fight Dela Hoya won't afford to loss...

Kumpare Cyrus. I'm just as nervous like you. Oscar still has the advantage. The question is what does he bring into the ring? If both boxers brings in 100% of their skill and wisdom. Oscar will still have the advantage. Whoever looses focus, I believe that'll will be his dimized. Dundee said Oscar will win coz Oscar is the better fighter. Sometimes old and experienced can cloud their judgement. I say whoever wins is the better fighter.
