Drama sells but it can also splinter a fight training camp. Yahoo! Sports' Kevin Iole first reported that there was trouble in the Ricky Hatton-Floyd Mayweather Sr. paradise. So much so that the Hatton holdovers after his split with Billy Graham, reached out recently to Golden Boy Promotion's Richard Schaefer to line up trainer Freddie Roach for future fights. Clearly, that's an odd scenario with Hatton fighting Roach's guy Manny Pacquiao on Saturday night.
Without much inside knowledge, any fan watching HBO's 24/7, could see that Floyd Sr. was a bit loosy-goosy during the five-week training camp in Las Vegas. Roach was asked if he had heard Floyd Sr. was often late for his training sessions with Hatton:
"I think it's a slap in the face for a trainer to show up late for a training session with a world champion," Roach said.
Problems seemed to arise with one of Hatton's closest confidants Lee Beard, who apparently didn't enjoy working with Floyd Sr. The Guardian reports that the discontent in the camp included making Floyd Sr. an outsider:
The story goes that when they went to Los Angeles for a press conference last week, they did not tell him they were staying overnight and he consequently did not bring with him the medication he needs for his debilitating chest condition. Instead, he turned up in his suit, with no change of clothes, and someone had to rush to a drugstore to get his medicine.
Meanwhile, FightNews is reporting all of this untrue.
The Guardian also reported a rumor that Hatton was injured last week and finished his sparring two days early on Wednesday. There was also word that he took a cortisone shot in his left elbow.
Listen here after the big fight on Saturday night. Starting at 1 a.m. ET, Cofield will host the ESPNRadio1100/Yahoo! Sports postfight show from the media center at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
