Tyler Splichal’s elusive slide

Yahoo Sports Minute

Tyler Splichal has defied the odds before. A former walk-on for the University of Nebraska Omaha baseball team, the third baseman has earned numerous honors including conference Freshman of the Year in 2010. Now a senior, Splichal threw caution to the wind once again by nearly getting thrown out at the plate.

In a recent game against fellow Summit League foe Oakland, Splichal scored in one of the most unconventional fashions possible. While trying to get home from third, the Mavericks infielder put on the brakes and retreated back to third when he realized Golden Grizzlies catcher Nolan Jacoby had the ball. But before Jacoby could chase him back up the baseline, Splichal reversed course quickly, ducked over the diving catcher and touched home while eluding the backstop's tag. It appeared Jacoby just missed the tag, holding the ball in his right hand, while stumbling over the resourceful Splichal. After all, the kid wasn't a two-time member of the conference academic honor roll for nothing.

Once quick golf note: Tiger Woods' former caddie Steve Williams is in the news again. Williams thinks the four-time Masters champion should have been disqualified after Woods' controversial drop on the 15th hole at Augusta National during the second round of last week's tournament. Williams is now on the bag for Adam Scott, the 2013 Masters champ.
