Timofey Mozgov dunks down 3 in closing seconds of Nuggets’ latest loss

Things haven't gone so well for the Denver Nuggets over the last calender year. The franchise lost in the first round of the playoffs to the lower-seeded Golden State Warriors. Then, despite winning NBA Coach of the Year for the first time of his career, George Karl was fired. A protracted search for Karl's replacement followed before the organization finally settled on Brian Shaw. This after the Nuggets lost respected front-office man and 2013 NBA Executive of the Year Masai Ujiri to the Toronto Raptors. As for Shaw, he's seen a little bit of everything in his first year as a head coach in the NBA, from an unconscious mascot in the team's home opener to a very public row with guard Andre Miller. What happened in the closing seconds of Monday's 94-92 defeat to the Memphis Grizzlies simply adds another chapter.

Down three with seven seconds left, Shaw called a play coming out of a timeout for 7-foot-1 center Timofey Mozgov to take the potential game-tying shot. Keep in mind Mozgov had converted just one 3-point attempt in 203 career games coming into the Memphis contest. One. Mozgov got a good look but his shot from beyond the arc was short. Here's where it got interesting. Instead of kicking it out to an open Ty Lawson for another 3-point attempt as the clock wound down, Mozgov grabbed his own rebound and dunked it. Remember, dunks are worth two points. The Nuggets were forced to foul on the ensuing Memphis inbounds and Grizzlies guard Courtney Lee converted one of two free throws. The Nuggets were unable to get another shot off. Final score: Memphis 94, Denver 92. "We know that I can make 3s," Mozgov said after tying his career-high of 23 points. "We tried. I just missed it. It wasn't good." No. No, it wasn't.

Bad omen?

Moving to baseball, Los Angeles Angels hitting coach Don Baylor was injured while catching the ceremonial first pitch by Vladimir Guerrero prior to the team's opener against the Seattle Mariners. The 64-year-old was taken to UCI Medical Center and diagnosed with a fractured right femur. The team announced he would have surgery on Tuesday.
