Once upon a time, University of Louisville quarterback Teddy Bridgewater was considered a Heisman hopeful — possibly even a favorite. But after pulling the plug on the school's Heisman campaign — and taking out a rather large insurance policy on himself — the junior QB's chances for taking home the award given to the best player in college football took another significant hit after a stunning 38-35 loss to Central Florida in October. But thanks to Jameis Winston's off-the-field issues and a key moment Thursday night, that may have changed.
With its hopes for a second straight BCS bowl berth dashed due to that loss to the Knights, No. 19 Louisville went into its Thursday contest with Cincinnati playing for a spot in the Russell Athletic Bowl. Down 14-10 to the Bearcats in the fourth quarter, Bridgewater made a play similar to one 2012 Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel might make that could renew Bridgewater's prospects for picking up the hardware in New York next weekend. Facing a third-and-8 on the Cincinnati 22-yard line, Bridgewater took the shotgun snap and eluded a barrage of swarming defenders before launching a ball sidearm to the corner of the end zone off his back foot. Senior wide receiver Damian Copeland made a brilliant catch — getting both feet inbounds — to complete the highlight. Louisville went on to win 31-24 in overtime to finish the regular season 11-1.
Battle of the Laughingstocks
Moving to the NBA, the New York Knicks added to the Brooklyn Nets' early-season misery thanks to a 113-83 victory over their cross-river rival. The highlight of the 30-point blowout was Andrea Bargani getting tangled up with Kevin Garnett — then being ejected for jawing with Garnett moments later.
Houston, you have a problem
Finally in the NFL, the suddenly red-hot Jacksonville Jaguars handed the Houston Texans their 11th straight loss after a 27-20 victory to kick off Week 14. But look at the bright side, Texans fans: you're that much closer to the No. 1 pick in the 2014 draft.
