Remember the name Hernan Perez. A middle infielder for the Detroit Tigers' Double-A affiliate Erie SeaWolves, Perez is well thought of within the organization. Here's what Tigers manager Jim Leyland told Lynn Henning of The Detroit News when Detroit broke spring camp in Florida last month:
"He's one of my and the coaches' favorites," Leyland said. "We think he's really going to be a good big league player. He's got a good feel for things at a young age (22 last month). He's got a great idea of how to hit."
He can also play defense too. His glove work was on center stage in a recent game against the Bowie Baysox. With a runner on first and the ball hit up the middle, Perez snagged the ball with his glove and flipped it to the second baseman without using his throwing hand. SeaWolves skipper Chris Cron was impressed. Here's what he told The Erie Times-News:
"It was a SportsCenter highlight type of play," said Cron about Perez's play. "He made a play that I'm not sure I've ever seen."
A guy who has been making plays for 10 seasons in the NBA is Dwyane Wade. The Heat star was at it again Tuesday night in Game 2 of Miami's first-round series with Milwaukee. D-Wade converted an electric putback dunk off a Mario Chalmers' miss in his team's 98-86 win over the Bucks to take a 2-0 series lead.
And the new playoff system in college football will be known as - wait for it - College Football Playoff. Creative, right? The four-team postseason will get underway at the end of the 2014 season and crown a national champion at Cowboys Stadium on January 12, 2015.
