Texas Rangers center fielder Craig Gentry's nickname is "Kitten Face". The 29-year old outfielder lived up to his feline moniker Tuesday night when he made a diving catch to preserve a 4-2 Rangers victory over the Cubs at Wrigley Field.
"It was amazing. The kid's a cat out there. He's fast and he tracks down everything," starting pitcher Derek Holland said of Gentry's grab on a sinking Darwin Barney liner with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the ninth. "As soon as it went up all I was thinking is this guy's going to get it and there he was right there to get it for us."
Holland had a vested interest in the play. After scattering only two hits and striking out six over seven shutout innings, the lefty was either going to pick up up a win or get tagged with a loss. Thanks to Gentry, the guy they call Dutch Oven cooked up a "W".
In hockey, the NHL will reportedly have six outdoor games next season. The popular Winter Classic returns on January 1, 2014 with the Detroit Red Wings hosting the Toronto Maple Leafs at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor. That will be followed by a pair of contests at Yankee Stadium, one at Soldier Field and one each at Vancouver's B.C. Place and Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles.
Finally in college basketball news, Oklahoma State point guard Marcus Smart will return to Stillwater for his sophomore year. He was projected to be a top-five pick.
