It's no secret the city of Detroit has been hit with hard times recently. Just last month, the once-booming metropolis filed for bankruptcy. But sporting events are supposed to serve as a safe haven from current events. Not so much in Cleveland Wednesday night.
During the ninth inning of a 4-all tie between the Detroit Tigers and Cleveland Indians at Progressive Field, a "Let's Go Tigers!" chant started. The home team fans booed and came up with a cheer of their own: "Detroit's bankrupt!" Ouch. The inappropriate cheer thankfully petered out quickly. Prince Fielder hit a two-run double in the 14th as the Tigers won 6-5 for their 11th straight victory.
The fans were behaving badly in South Florida as well. Well, at least one fan was. A Cristiano Ronaldo supporter rushed the field of a match between Real Madrid and Chelsea in the Guinness International Champions Cup in Miami. The pair shared a very long hug before security intervened and took the fan away without further incident.
