Carlos Gomez’s catch pretty but painful

Yahoo Sports Minute

Milwaukee Brewers center fielder Carlos Gomez is in the middle of a breakout season. The 27-year-old, nicknamed Go-Go, was selected to his first All-Star Game in 2013 and, according to the WAR (wins above replacement) metric, is one of the most valuable players to his team — joining the likes of Mike Trout, Miguel Cabrera and Andrew McCutchen. You may remember he robbed Cincinnati Reds first baseman Joey Votto of a home run in spectacular fashion last month. Thursday night it was Votto's teammate, Brandon Phillips, who fell victim to Gomez's gold glove-caliber defense. But it was Gomez who ultimately paid the price.

With the Brewers up 1-0 on the Reds in the fourth, Phillips hit a ball deep to straightaway center. Gomez leaped and caught the ball but landed awkwardly. You could hear the crash as he hit the padded wall at Miller Park. He immediately grabbed his right hip and got up gingerly. He would eventually leave the game with a sprained right knee and said afterwards, "When I start walking around, it starts to feel better but when I try to run, my knee doesn't let me." Votto was the hero a couple innings later as his solo shot was the difference in a 2-1 Cincinnati victory.

Moving to NFL news, it was a tough day for the Pittsburgh Steelers' backfield. Highly touted rookie Le'Veon Bell aggravated a knee injury that kept him out of the team's first preseason game after fellow running back Isaac Redman missed time with a stinger.

And New Jersey Devils fans can rest easy. The NHL franchise — which has serious financial issues — was purchased by Philadelphia 76ers owner Josh Harris.
