Brett Favre says Rams QB Austin Davis could be 'next Tom Brady or Kurt Warner'

Perhaps Brett Favre was simply excited about Austin Davis' progress. After all, the pair are the only two Southern Miss alums to start more than one NFL game at quarterback. But the future Pro Football Hall of Famer's recent comments to ESPN's Ed Werder are a little off-base.

"Austin can definitely play at this level," Favre told the veteran reporter. "Not to sound off my rocker, but [Davis], in my mind, can be the next Tom Brady or Kurt Warner. [Brian] Hoyer as well. Austin, like those mentioned, just needed a legit opportunity."

Slow your roll, Brett. No need to lump the guy starting ahead of Johnny Football for the Cleveland Browns into such hyperbole. Sure, the guy who St. Louis Rams security doesn't even recognize is coming off a huge win over the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks. But to compare Davis to a pair of players who were also famously overlooked (Davis, like Warner, was undrafted and Brady was a sixth-rounder) is a bit much. The 25-year-old has a pair of wins under his belt as starting quarterback, while Hoyer has six. Brady has three Super Bowl rings and two NFL MVPs while Warner has hoisted the Lombardi Trophy once and also earned a pair of league MVP awards.

Yes, Davis is off to a promising start filling in for the injured Sam Bradford and Shaun Hill. But putting him in the same company as a couple of future inductees into Canton is a stretch. Even for a homer.
