Best sports-figure homes of 2014

I'll be home for Christmas. If only in my dreams.

The last line of the 1943 tune written by Kim Gannon and recorded by Bing Crosby has become a holiday-season staple. And after seeing some sports-figure homes that were in the news in 2014, there were more than a few dream locations anyone would love returning to.

The first noteworthy dwelling isn't even truly a residence — it's part of an NFL stadium. But Kansas City Chiefs owner Clark Hunt's three-level, six-bedroom palace inside Arrowhead Stadium is more than just your run-of-the-mill luxury suite. The incredible space includes marble and hardwood flooring throughout, a football-themed stained glass window (which curiuosly appears to show a Chiefs quarterback about to be sacked), a wall of three flatscreen TVs (we're guessing DirecTV's Sunday Ticket gets a lot of play on gamedays) and an ornate fireplace flanked by Roman busts.

As for 17-time Grand Slam singles champion Roger Federer's new Swiss villa on the shores of Lake Zurich, the property in swanky Wallerau is not too shabby either. It features floor-to-ceiling windows, a swimming pool, large balconies and underground parking. The price tag for the modern home is in excess of $10 million. There are also a pair of luxury apartments being built on the 1.5 acre lot. Federer's parents, Robert and Lynette, are reportedly set to move into one of them.

LaDainian Tomlinson finally unloaded his place on 18755 Heritage Drive in Poway, Calif., in late August. The 9,610 square-foot estate, which sits on 13 acres in a gated community in the San Diego area, features five bedrooms, five and a half bathrooms and sold for $3.495 million. That's $5,000 more than LT bought it for in 2004. But Tomlinson and his family have moved back to Texas and don't need the sprawling mansion anymore. So what makes the property truly special? How about a pool that features a "pirate-style" rope bridge and a home theater that has half of a vintage Ford Mustang in it!

The last dreamy spread is also in the San Diego area. Five-time major winner Phil Mickelson's pad is fairly breathtaking as well.

The Tuscan-style home in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., is nearly 9,200 square feet and sits on 4.55 acres and has multiple buildings. The main home has five bedrooms and seven bathrooms. Features include a den, media room, wine cellar, billiard room and exercise room. There's plenty of attention to detail in the home, as well, including Baccarat crystal and sterling fixtures, Calcutta Oro marble floors and mosaic tile in the shower individually cut and placed by the master stone mason who helped build the Bellagio casino in Las Vegas. There are mahogany doors throughout the home, and hand-carved walnut panels crown the office ceiling. There are also two guest houses.

The backyard has a huge pool, spa and a putting green so fast Mickelson has used it to practice for majors. The property has olive and pepper trees, just to complete the feel of an Italian retreat.

Mickelson bought the home in 2001 for $5.95 million and began listing it for sale in 2008 at $12.225 million. It's been listed several times since, often with the asking price of $7.095 million. The house was last up for sale in March 2014 with a price tag of $6.495 million.

But it can all be yours for just $5.99 million. Oh, and about $75,000 annually in property taxes.

Happy Holidays everyone!
