If you haven't heard of the Mercer University football program, maybe Alex Avant will change that. The sophomore defensive back — who was named the Pioneer Football League defensive player of the week following the Bears' 31-17 victory over Drake this past Saturday — had an interception returned for touchdown that you simply have to see to believe. Sure, Avant had four solo tackles and seven assists — but it was the pick six that was truly amazing. With Mercer up 10-0 in the second quarter, Bulldogs quarterback Andy Rice dropped back to pass from his own 29 yard line. The ball was tipped not once but twice and Avant ended up with it. The Lithonia, Ga. native ran toward the Drake sideline then ran all the way across the field to the other sideline for the eventual score. Mercer eventually won 31-17.
