Winless Roger Federer blamed Switzerland’s Davis Cup loss on Stainslas Wawrinka

    (AP)

Switzerland's Roger Federer and Stanislas Wawrinka both went 0-2 in this weekend's Davis Cup tie against the United States. According to Federer, only one of them deserves blame. I'll give you a wild guess about who Federer believes was responsible for the surprising American sweep.

From the Associated Press, detailing Federer's statements to the French media after he and Wawrinka lost their doubles match to Mardy Fish and Bob Bryan on Saturday:

[Federer] claimed not to be too disappointed while pointing a finger at Wawrinka, who slumped back in his chair looking every inch the junior partner in the relationship.

"I played well enough in doubles, but Stanislas not so much," Federer said, adding that Wawrinka "didn't have his best match in singles. It's a shame, because of that defeat we weren't able to put the U.S under pressure."

In the parlance of reality shows, Wawrinka got thrown under the bus.

What Federer fails to mention is that after Wawrinka lost to Fish, he immediately went out and lost to John Isner, which was a much bigger defeat for the Swiss team.

Wawrinka is ranked No. 26. Fish is No. 8. Playing on clay and in front of a partisan crowd, the gap between the two wasn't as a big, but still; the loss wasn't exactly a stunner.

Federer's loss to Isner, on the other hand, was. That's a point Switzerland has to have. Wawrinka's would have been nice, Federer's was crucial. He rarely loses to players outside the top 10, let alone in his home soil in a Davis Cup match.

The two share the blame for Saturday's doubles loss. Federer and Wawrinka looked out of sync, especially for a team that won a gold medal at the last Summer Olympics. That they were playing a team that was partnering for only the second time in their careers only added to the insult.

It's an old saying that a team is only as strong as its weakest player. Switzerland's squad was as weak as its strongest one. Roger Federer wasn't himself this weekend and it resulted in an early exit from the Davis Cup.

Maybe you should have gotten a better translation of what Federer actually said. All you did was plagiarize an incorrect AP story. You are terrible.

This was just cleared up in another article from yesterday where his French translation was misinterpreted. Why was this written? I'm baffled by the integrity of journalists covering tennis for yahoo. It's really awful.

"The Stan comment was taken completely the wrong way. I'd never say that, and I'll move on quickly. I spoke with both (captain) Severin (Luthi) and Stan to make sure there is no misunderstanding." Roger has explained to them, especially Stan.Case closed. There's nothing to talk about..Please understand the whole situation before you start writing an article.

Yet another Chris Chase finger-wagging, holier-than-thou, "tsk tsk" article that is COMPLETELY INACCURATE. Federer's comments in French were incorrectly translated into English. But when Chris Chase reads someone else's note about how Federer threw Wawrinka under the bus, does he care to investigate further? Nope. Not only does Chase run with it, but adds his own "I sit at my computer and pass judgment on athletes, because MY opinion carries great weight" spin on it.

FIRE this guy already, Yahoo!!!!! Please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

this article should be taken off...it's pretty clear from the follow up article that it was a translation mistake and that Fed didn't blame Wawrinka at all...I expect anyone working for yahoo Sports to realize this and take the article off, rather than spout self-righteous advice.

And for those who insist that "Federer won because there was no competition" it would not hurt to remind them that he beat Roddick, Safin and Hewitt who were all Nr 1 at some point, beat Nadal twice, Djokovic and other players that had beaten Nadal clearly (Gonzalez, Soderling, Murray twice) to reach the final. He won 12 of his 16 GS titles, 4 of his 6 Masters Championships and spent more than 160 of his 237 consecutive weeks and more than 200 of his total 285 with Nadal as Nr 2. He beat both Nadal and Djoko for his Master´s Championship in 2010 and trashed Nadal in 2011 even though he was past his prime. Those are facts, not biased comments.

Chase is an incompetent fool. He has always spent time critizicing Federer for whatever motive he can think of. He pretty much asked for his retirement in early 2009 but never came back to say "I was totally wrong" when the Swiss Maestro came back to win "only" 3 more GS and 2 more Masters Championships along with a few Master´s 100, and some other tournaments... and reclaim the Nr 1 spot. Chase will never have the stature to shone Roger's shoes.

Are you kidding me, Chase? You're gonna shed the Fed in a bad light because of a statement he made in French that was poorly translated into English? Did you bother reading further into the article you got your ''facts'' from where Roger says [in English], ''WE just had a couple of games where WE struggled too much and couldn't convert OURSELVES.'' That sure sounds to me like he's taking the blame too.

Maybe those blaming Federer ought to learn what he ACTUALLY said.... which was "Stan played NOT a bad match" but the French translation missed out the word "not". Federer said in his presscon in Rotterdam that the press made something out of nothing ... as usual. And so do bloggers who are quick to #$%$ him before finding out the real facts!

Federer never has been a good loser and really bad sportsmanship to blame his partner.

CHRIS CHASE gets PAID to get HITS on this website thru emotive articles that trigger response. So stop HATING on him, he is doing his job brilliantly. His job is not to write proper news pieces.

Chris Chase is a terrible writer. That's the whole point. If he gets paid for that, then that's not journalism. He's an utter embarrassment to the writing community. He might as well be a prostitute.

Federer has said snarky comments in the past about other players. He said something mean once about Ljubicic that I remember. Now it's funny that his game isn't so great anymore and he has to blame someone else.

Chris Chase always instigates controversy...he does it on purpose so that people like myself will respond. I do think Federer misstated what he really wanted to say but on the other hand, as gentlemanly as Federer appears to be, I think he is somewhat egotistical and seems to make excuses lately when he loses.
