When Whitney Houston opened Arthur Ashe Stadium (video)

You can never have too many Whitney Houston tributes.

In 1997, the late singer performed her hit "One Moment In Time" at the grand opening of Arthur Ashe Stadium. Her rousing vocal capped off an hour-long ceremony that paid tribute to the American tennis hero and celebrated the opening of the $254 million stadium.

Venus Williams made her US Open debut that year, advancing to the final before losing to Martina Hingis, 6-4, 6-0.

On Saturday night, Serena Williams tweeted a message about Houston's death that referenced the song she sang at the Ashe opening.

Serena was attending the Clive Davis pre-Grammies party at the Beverly Hills Hilton, the same hotel where Houston died on Saturday night.

Oh boo hoo already! She was just another good screamer. Add some coloratura in there and apparently you have "art." I'm so tired of hearing about her. I just KNEW it would make its way over to frickin TENNIS news as well! It's a fad right now for every celebrity, writer, sports player, whoever to pay tribute to Twitney, even if they don't really care. It's the in thing right now. Why is it so sad when someone overdoses? She made her bed, as well as Michael Jackson. I can't say that I was at all sad when he bought the farm that contained little boys for livestock. Am I the only individual that noticed how she grabbed even more attention by overdosing on the eve of the grammies, in the very same hotel? Gimme a break.

then why did you have to spend a second of your time typing this comment if you didn't care? LOL.. you're a FOOL!!!

Seriously? I've noticed that this seems to be the very question that everyone writes whenever someone posts something that the responded doesn't quite agree with. It was by no means a waste of my time. I am entitled to my own opinion, just as those who are making comments about Chris Chase are entitled to their own opinion, just as you are entitled to your own opinion for thinking I'm a fool for writing something you don't agree with.

Hey Chris, thought writing an article about Whitney would stop everyone from ripping on you? Think again. Oh I almost forgot, this article sucks.

Chris stop stealing articles from ESPN and other tennis websites. I'm sure those writers want nothing to do with you.

Speaking of shows: 'The Dome People' (next year's proposed SuperBowl halftime show) is really starting to sizzle; many people love 'monster truck' shows?! And even the phrase
"surf--- and turf" gets "it" going on for sizeable number of people too... Wait till those
folks get a look-see at the 'Surface and Turf' surface guys driving those huge honkers
when rolling out an expandable (with built-in springs) sheet across the field (it's what
they do with fake grass) and as it is laid/rolled down--one at a time--a letter pops up
from the flat field 'S-U-R-F-A-C-E and T-U-R-F' standing letters. But there's more:
the stripper guy follows the layer with a sucker that eats up the sheet one letter
at a time! Like super vacuum.
"If I had a hammer, I'd hammer the morning. I'd hammer in the evening; I'd hammer all night
long. I'd scream out DANGER, I'd scream out WARNING..." The painters juggling paint
brush skit could have lines incorporated into the same song: and after the electrician
jolts the housekeepers (maids: everyone loves a person dressed in a maid costume),
the lead singer could offer "Doctor Doctor, can't you hear me calling calling?"
"We're on our way; they could have nothing to say..." OH NO: what about
'Dolly Patron' presenting the D-O-M-E- People?! She does a great
      'Amazing Grace'.
