In the insular world of tennis, sometimes an unrelated topic will sent Twitter a-twitching. But it's usually sports-related.

Monday, there was an outpouring of sadness when players learned the news of the death of actor-comedian Robin Williams.

My tennis timeline is pretty much split 50-50 between male and female players but, for whatever reason, every single Tweet that went by was from a female player.

Most of them probably didn't know that Williams loved to play the game and was a big tennis fan, a regular fixture at the U.S. Open.

Tragically, not this year.

Here's a sampling. As you can see, regardless of country of origin, Williams spoke the universal language of laughter.

From Serbia ...

To Canada ...

To Belarus ...

To Ukraine ...

To Russia ...

To the good old U.S. of A. ...

To Spain ...

To Puerto Rico ...

To Russia ...

To France.
