This is how you pull off "out there," Venus.
In her doubles match Tuesday at the Australian Open, noted tennis fashion plate Bethanie Mattek-Sands sported a jail stripe outfit and eye black, which was presumably applied as much for style as it was for sunblocking purposes. It was an outfit that managed to challenge the conventions of tennis fashion without looking like a pie crust. I think it looks pretty great.
Out of view are Mattek-Sands' trademark knee socks (I couldn't get a good picture of the whole ensemble on the web feed). But believe me when I say that they're black and they're spectacular.
Mattek-Sands is best known for her wild ensembles and tattooed arms, but she's more than a crazy shirt and jacked-up socks. The 25-year-old American is ranked No. 48 in the world in singles and No. 17 in doubles. Last year, she was the hero in the U.S. Fed Cup victory over Russia, winning a do-or-die match that advanced the team to the finals.
In August, we asked Mattek-Sands about her sartorial choices:
I always have something in my pocket. Honestly, most of the time it's last minute. This time I'm a little more low-key, and a few people have gotten on me about it. I've been with Under Armour this year, and they're really starting to step up their stuff ... Literally, if the day before I find something, I'll rock it out on the court.
