James Blake continues his struggles at Wimbledon

James Blake has never advanced past the third round of Wimbledon, but the American had high hopes of making a deep run at the All England Club this year. Instead, Blake was sent packing in the opening hours of the tournament, as he suffered a 7-5, 6-4, 7-6 (5) upset at the hands of Italy's Andreas Seppi.

It's an especially disappointing loss for Blake given that he made the finals of the grass court tournament at Queens Club last week (where he eventually lost to Andy Murray). Afterward, he said he was looking forward to his chances at Wimbledon.

The loss is the third straight in a Grand Slam for the world's 17th-ranked player. Blake lost in the 4th round at the Australian Open and was ousted in the first round in Paris last month.

In his seven Wimbledons, Blake has advanced to the third round just twice. That's surprising, considering that the grass courts should be advantageous for the 29-year old. He doesn't possess the killer serve like an Andy Roddick or Goran Ivanisevic, but his return of serve should theoretically serve him well.

Instead, Blake's struggles have been a microcosm of those of American men at Wimbledon. It's only day one, but the annual Yankee purge seems to already be starting.
