It would be easy to say that the Venus Williams upset was the match of the day, but we have to hand it over to the man from France, Gilles Simon, taking down Lleyton Hewitt in five sets. Simon dropped the first two sets in front of his countrymen before waking up, winning the third 6-4 and the fourth 6-1 to get to the deciding fifth set. From there it wasn't as easy, as Hewitt took him the distance before Simon was able to win that final set 7-5 to advance as the 15 seed.

This one is an easy one, with Urszula Radwanska taking down Venus Williams in three sets, tossing the American in the first round at the French Open for the first time since 2001. Venus, battling injury, made a charge in the second set and wouldn't go away in the third, but it seemed her lack of practice and play due to those back problems was too much to overcome.

Since James Blake got bounced badly in the first round of the French Open it seemed fair to include him in the only day he was eligible. The Travis Mathew gear is solid on the golf course or the clay, and Blake looked great in it.

No knock to Andrea Hlavackova, who lost her opening round match at the French Open, but I'll never understand the fashion move of wearing the skirt over the pants.

"If it's the last match, I'll let you know," Venus said after her loss. "That's pretty much how it works."

Day 2 at Roland Garros means the return of the champions, with Rafael Nadal and Maria Sharapova taking on first round opponents. Nadal, a seven-time champion here, will face Germany’s Daniel Brands, while Sharapova gets Hsieh Su-Wei.
