Wednesday wasn't the best night for the Oudin family.

Just as 17-year old Melanie was walking off the court in a quarterfinal loss to Caroline Wozniacki at the U.S. Open, SI.com reported that Melanie's father, John Oudin, accused his wife of having an affair with Melanie's coach in a 2008 divorce filing.

Leslie Oudin is said to have denied the charges.

Jon Wertheim and Andrew Lawrence authored the story. They write:

In a sworn statement made on Aug. 10, 2009, John Oudin specifically alleges his wife had been unfaithful with Melanie's coach, Brian de Villiers. "I didn't initial [sic] take any action regarding my early suspicions because I didn't want to believe my wife was having an affair with my daughter's tennis coach ... On December 29, 2007, I confronted my wife about whether she was having an affair with Brian de Villiers. I confronted Brian de Villiers separately. My wife and Brian de Villiers both admitted to me they were having an affair."

John Oudin also states in the affidavit that Melanie suspected the alleged affair. "Both [Melanie and her twin sister, Katherine] asked me point blank if I thought Mom was having an affair with Brian. When I asked why they had suspicions, Melanie told on one occasion she woke up at 1:00 a.m. in her hotel room and Leslie was not there. She called Brian's cell phone and connected with her."

Whether any of this is true or not is beyond my purview. However, I can't help but remember the number of times during the Open that I found myself repulsed by de Villiers demeanor.

He was the one who blamed Oudin's hotel fiasco on the fact that he didn't want to pay a double rate. And during Oudin's loss to Wozniacki, he told ESPN's Pam Shriver at the start of the second set that he didn't think his star pupil "had the mindset" to win the match.

The coach was right, of course, but that doesn't mean de Villiers should be calling out his 17-year old player on national television. It was almost as if he was trying to deflect the blame from himself.

This doesn't mean he was having an affair with Oudin's mother, mind you. But there were a few times during the quarterfinal when I was thinking to myself that Oudin needed a new coach. She may need one now more than ever.
