Busted Racquet closes out coverage of the 2012 French Open with a look back at the best photographs of Maria Sharapova and Rafael Nadal's titles at Roland Garros.

For a guy who has held the Coupe des Mousquetaires more than anyone in history, Rafael Nadal wasn't as spatially aware of the French Open trophy's dimensions or as cognizant of its heft as you'd imagine.

While receiving the trophy after his delayed four-set victory over Novak Djokovic, Nadal held it over his head in triumph and then quickly brought it down too close to his face, banging his cheek in the process.

It was the closest he came to getting broken on Monday.

John McEnroe asked him whether it hurt.

"No, I'm too happy," Nadal said.

It didn't matter how Novak Djokovic lost the rain-delayed French Open final to Rafael Nadal. It could have been off a wicked Nadal forehand or a topspin lob or an attempted passing shot that hit the tape on the net. Whichever way it happened, Rafael Nadal was not going to be defeated in his quest for his seventh French Open title.

That doesn't mean Djokovic can be happy with the way it went down. Serving at 5-6, 30-40 in the fourth set, Djokovic uncorked a double fault to hand Nadal his record-setting seventh French Open title and to end his own quest to become the first man since Rod Laver to win four majors in a row.

Djokovic didn't dwell on it. "He was better in the deciding moments," he said after the match. "I could have easily gone out in the fourth round or quarterfinals and saved some match points. To get this far, it's just a great effort and I'm really happy to be here."

(AP)Rafael Nadal won his record-setting seventh French Open title on Monday, defeating world No. 1 Novak Djokovic 6-4, 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 in their rain-delayed final to break a tie with Bjorn Borg for most titles won in the clay court major.

Djokovic led 2-1 in the fourth set when play resumed after an 18-hour rain delay pushed back the conclusion of the final until 1 p.m. on Monday. He was quickly broken in the first game back on court but traded serves with Nadal to get to 5-5. Djokovic hit a loose forehand at 15-0, 5-6 and later double faulted on match point, making Nadal the most prolific champion in French Open history.

Nadal fell to his knees, embraced Djokovic and then climbed into the crowd to hug his family. It was an unusually raucous affair for the Nadal clan, a sign that the record-setting win and ending his funk against Djokovic, who beat him seven times last year, was a sort of cathartic tennis exorcism.

The rain didn't go away Sunday in Paris, causing two stoppages at the French Open final and postponing the finish of the men's final between Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal until 7 a.m. ET on Monday.

Nadal, the six-time tournament champion, was leading the top-ranked Djokovic 6-4, 6-3, 2-6, 1-2 when play was postponed for a second time at 6:54 p.m. local time. An earlier stoppage in the second set lasted 34 minutes. A misty rain had fallen for much of the match and contributed to a heavy feel for both the clay and the tennis balls.

The Spaniard won the first two sets and was up an early break in the third before Djokovic rattled off eight games. According to the ATP's Greg Sharko, it was the first time Nadal had ever lost eight consecutive games at the French Open. Given Nadal's dominance at Roland Garros -- he's 51-1 in his career -- the Djokovic comeback was nothing short of stunning.

Novak Djokovic was unhappy following Rafael Nadal's fifth break of serve in the French Open final. Naturally, he took it out on a sign advertising carbonated water.

As the world No. 1 approached his bench during a second-set changeover, he took his racquet back and smashed it against a Perrier sign on the bottom of the seat.

Much has happened to Maria Shrapova in the eight years between pulling a teenage surprise at Wimbledon and capping the career Grand Slam on Saturday at Roland Garros. One of the few constants: Her victory celebrations at majors.

Fall to two knees, drop racquet to side, tuck feet behind rear, sit up straight, cup hands, bury face in said hands. She did it at Wimbledon as a 17-year-old, two years later in New York, two years later in Melbourne, when it looked like she was about to get on a historic roll and then on Saturday, as 25-year-old who finally got back to the top of the tennis world after years spent battling injuries.

Given her dominant play at Roland Garros, expect to see Sharapova's patented move again this year, either at Wimbledon, the Olympics or the US Open.

It didn't take long for someone to try and dethrone Maria Sharapova from her French Open and No. 1 reign. During the trophy ceremony after the Russian's emphatic 6-3, 6-2 victory over Sara Errani, the announcer at Roland Garros mistakenly announced Sharapova as the runner-up at the event.

Hearing the mistake, Errani smiled for the crowd and triumphantly raised her arms in the air. Sharapova laughed and playfully raised her arms in confusion.

The announcer quickly corrected herself to announce Errani as the runner-up. She received her trophy from presenter Monica Seles and then watched as Sharapova was awarded her first-ever Coupe Suzanne Lenglen.

"It was funny," Sharapova said after the match. " I actually saw her reaction better when she lifted her hands. It's nice to see when, you know, when a finalist is in good spirits and the way she talked and the speech."
