England's top division was staring at an embarrassing record of just one win in its first eight Champions League group stage matches after both Manchester clubs fell behind 1-0. But United and City both managed to pull out 2-1 victories over Wolfsburg and Borussia Moenchengladbach, respectively.

Man United equalized in the 34th minute on a penalty by Juan Mata (no, not Wayne Rooney) and grabbed the lead on Chris Smalling's 53rd-minute goal that was set up by Mata's brilliant backheel to the delight of the Old Trafford faithful.

Man City kept its match scoreless at Gladbach thanks to Joe Hart's penalty save in the 20th minute. The Citizens evened things in the 65th minute on Nicolas Otamendi's goal, then won it in the 90th when Sergio Aguero won a penalty (on a questionable foul by American midfielder Fabian Johnson) and converted from the spot.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice to lead Real Madrid to a 2-0 victory at Malmo. The Portugal star's 29th-minute goal was the 500th of his career for club and country.

Juventus, last season's Champions League runner-up, also won 2-0 at home against Sevilla. Alvaro Morata's 41st-minute goal is all the Old Lady would need to go top of Group D with six points. Simone Zaza's 87th-minute breakaway sealed the win.
