Wayne Rooney gave a great performance in Manchester United's 4-2 win over Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League group stage and he was rewarded for his efforts with a pair of momentous achievements. With his two goals in the match (that could have easily been three), Rooney reached 200 goals for Manchester United and became the highest scoring British player in the history of the Champions League.
After coming back from an ugly head wound to score his first Premier League goal of the season at the weekend, Rooney has the Old Trafford crowd firmly behind him again even though he spent the summer passive-aggressively trying to force a transfer for the second time in three years. Though the fans have tried hard to forget this, at least one reporter at ITV has not. And after the match, he decided to spice up the usual bland player interview fare by asking Rooney point-blank, "A lot of speculation — did you ever ask to leave?" This question did not please Rooney and his quick change in tone reflected that.
"Listen, I've just told ya I'm concentrating on me football which I've been doing all summer," he snapped back with a murderous look in his eyes. This scared the reporter back into a lighter line of questioning and the interview finished all smiles, but Rooney's gruff non-answer speaks volumes. There might be a third installment of this saga yet to come.
