After putting a scare into the Netherlands, Australia lost their second consecutive game and were again eliminated from the World Cup in the group stage. They finish up the tournament on Monday against Spain, who will also be going home early.
While there’s no hope of advancing, their match against Spain will almost serve as the Socceroos’ World Cup Final. You see, they’ve never lost to La Roja in their history. Of course, they’ve never actually played a match against the defending champions. But that didn’t stop Sam Mac and Jules from Fox Sports Australia’s The B-League from coming up with an anthem celebrating their undefeated record versus their opponents:
The video, which was released at the start of the World Cup, has been part of a funny #PositiveSocceroosFact campaign -- think “Chuck Norris Facts," but for Australia’s soccer team. Take “Australia have NEVER lost a World Cup Final. Netherlands have lost it THREE times,” for example, or “Not a single Spanish player has ever won the @ALeague Golden Boot award.” All of which are true.
After winning the last World Cup and previous two European Championships, Spain have nothing to play for on Monday. It's the end of an era for them. Maybe that will be enough for Australia to maintain their undefeated record against them with some sort of result?
