The Swedish FA's decision to give Anders Svensson a new Volvo to mark his new record of 146 caps, but not Therese Sjogran for her record 187 caps at an annual awards gala has prompted widespread criticism.

From Reuters:

A midfielder, Svensson was presented with the key to a brand new Volvo during the annual Fotbollsgalan ceremony on Monday in recognition of breaking Thomas Ravelli's record of 143 caps.

Also in the audience, however, was the 36-year-old midfielder Therese Sjogran who has a record 187 caps for the national women's team. [...]

Many of her team-mates expressed their displeasure on Twitter and their comments sparked an immediate storm as viewers and fans watching the gala strongly criticised the association for not treating men and women equally.

The association acknowledged its mistake, saying it had always intended to honour Sjogran but that she was still playing whereas Svensson is expected to retire after the current World Cup campaign.

Which is bizarre logic since the 37-year-old Svensson is still playing, as well. Maybe they aren't feeling confident about the men's chances of beating Portugal this month and qualifying for the World Cup. But even if that is the case, it's impossible to rationalize how they could have thought this was a good idea. (Also: A Volvo? Maybe players who have been that dependable for so long would like something a little more dangerous.)

"It's not about the car itself, it's the way they did it," Sjogran told STV. "If they honored him, they should honor me."

If Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Helena Seger were in charge of the Swedish FA, this never would have happened.

UPDATE: According to The Local, French carmaker Peugeot has stepped in to offer Sjogran one of their vehicles and Svensson told Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet that "she can have my car."
