Stoke’s Asmir Begovic scores fastest goal ever by a goalkeeper

A mere 12 seconds into the match, Stoke goalkeeper Asmir Begovic scored an improbable goal against Southampton that will likely put him in the record books. Begovic simply booted a backpass up the pitch and Southampton's central defenders let it take a big bounce between them, which goalkeeper Artur Boruc wasn't prepared for. The ball then arched over his head and bounced in for the goal (gif here if you have trouble with the video).

According to Opta, Begovic is only the fifth goalkeeper to score in the Premier League era (Peter Schmeichel, Tim Howard, Brad Friedel and Paul Robinson being the other four). Even more amazing is the fact that this goal makes Begovic one of Stoke's joint top scorers this season.

Paul Smith was credited as holding the record for fastest goal scored by a keeper when he scored 23 seconds into Nottingham Forest's League Cup match against Leicester in 2007, but Begovic's goal beats that by a comfortable margin.

Southampton's Jay Rodriguez helped his side save face by scoring an equalizer shortly before halftime. The match ended in a 1-1 draw. Afterwards, Begovic wasn't feeling very boastful about his achievement. He told the BBC (via Reuters):

"It's a cool feeling but it is a fortunate incident. I feel bad for Artur Boruc when that happens but it's a good point for us.

"It does not make a goalkeeper look good, and after it (went in) I did not want to celebrate against (Boruc). We are at home and want to get points. We had to graft one out in the end with the conditions.

"It's the worst conditions you can play in. The wet you can deal with but the wind makes it difficult. You don't know where the ball is going to go."

Boruc, meanwhile, was immediately ready to forget the it. He said: "I don't want to remember it any more. I blame the wind for that. I'm really sorry for my teammates and our supporters but what can I say? What happens happens, and I need to bounce back. I promise to get those two points back."

He then vowed to never invite the wind to his birthday party ever again.
