Didier Drogba arrived at Pudong International Airport on Saturday to a massive and boisterous reception from fans of his new club, Shanghai Shenhua.
Inside the terminal, Drogba greeted the large number of supporters as camera flashes went off like a constant strobe light and joyous chants of "Didier Drogba la la la la la" rang out. But once Drogba made it outside (1:18 into the video), there were even more fans, who chanted his name loud enough to be heard at Bastian Schweinsteiger's house. They held up Shanghai scarves and Ivory Coast flags and Didier was given a bouquet of flowers before he got in a car that took him to his new club. But even after he drove off, the airport party continued as the swarm of supporters stood in the middle of the road and went on signing.
Drogba's two-and-a-half-year deal with Shanghai will reportedly pay him £200,000 a week (making him the highest paid player in China) and reunite him with former Chelsea teammate Nicolas Anelka, who was accused of being disrespectful by one of the club's fans for not joining the rest of the team in bowing to supporters after a match. From Goal.com:
"I am waiting for him," Anelka said. "There were a lot of games when I was alone in front, I would think if Didier was here the situation would be better. I could pass him the ball."
Well, yes. Yes you could.
