Seattle Sounders spoil Landon Donovan's final regular season match, win MLS Supporters Shield

There was a lot riding on Landon Dononvan's final MLS regular season match. The LA Galaxy needed a win over the Sounders in Seattle to beat them to the Supporters Shield and with emotions still running high after a testy 2-2 draw in southern California just six days earlier, the Sounders and their fans weren't really in the mood to give Donovan a storybook send-off.

Before the decisive final match Seattle fans set up a Landon Donovan pinata in the street so the local youth could hit with a stick (tweet via SB Nation).

And during the match, they chanted "U.S. reject" at their national team's all-time leading scorer in reference to his painful exclusion from the 2014 World Cup squad.

With the rain coming down either because the MLS gods were crying over the impending departure of the league's most decorated player or because it is never not raining in Seattle, both sides found it difficult to score in between scuffles and emotional flare-ups. Finally, Sounders midfielder Marco Pappa came off the bench and broke the deadlock in the 85th minute before adding a second during injury time for good measure. As a result, Seattle won the game and their first Supporters Shield by a score of 2-0 in front of more than 57,000 fans. This comes a month after Seattle won the US Open Cup for the fourth time.

Of course, getting a trophy for having the best regular season record is nice, but the silverware everyone wants most will at the end of the playoffs. And that's where Donovan might make Seattle fans regret this day.
