Preston steward trampled by police horse as fans invade pitch after Blackpool cup tie

The 2013-14 League Cup kicked off on Monday evening with Preston hosting fierce local rivals Blackpool at Deepdale. Prior to this first round match, the Lancashire sides hadn't faced each other since February 2010, but the animosity between them has been kept alive by stunts including a relegation-mocking plane and a cheeky Countdown Conundrum.

An 87th-minute header from Preston 's Tom Clarke decided the fate of the latest instalment of the West Lancashire derby (also known affectionately as the "donkey derby") but ugly scenes marred the result at full-time, when home fans invaded the pitch to goad their rivals. During the melee, a Preston steward who was trying to restrain a fan was trampled by a police horse.

The incident looks very serious, but the steward managed to walk away, with AP journalist Rob Harris tweeting that he is OK. The BBC confirm that the Deepdale worker injured his shoulder and was sent to have an X-ray. Further proof that they breed them tougher up north.
