Official instrument of 2014 World Cup banned from 2013 Confederations Cup

Dirty Tackle

Brazil's hope to provide their international tournaments with a somewhat unique, droning aural assault like the vuvuzela provided for the 2010 World Cup has taken a hit. The caxirola, an instrument designed especially for the 2014 World Cup, has been banned from this summer's Confederations Cup for the simple reason that Brazilian fans have already started using it as a weapon.

From the AP:

Brazil's Justice Minister Jose Eduardo Cardozo said Friday that the maraca-like instrument is ''not adequate'' to be used during the warm-up tournament.

The Brazilian answer to the vuvuzela, which had been approved by FIFA, made headlines for the wrong reasons last month after fans upset about their team's loss in a test event threw the green-and-yellow objects onto the pitch, putting players in danger and briefly interrupting the match.

Like the ruling against holding Brazil's friendly against England at the recently renovated Maracana stadium due to safety fears, this too will probably be overruled at some point. So players at the Confederations/World Cups might want to invest in Petr Cech style helmets.
