MLS unveils generic new logo

(MLS)

MLS has unveiled a new logo as part of a major rebrand for the league that completely eliminates the '90s style foot and ball design that has represented it from the beginning. And the new design is...well, it just is.

The new logo, which will be used for the 2015 season and beyond, is more of crest and its elements are all very simple at first glance. It will appear in customized colors for each club in the league. There's a slash that extends beyond the perimeter of the crest and demonstrates a total disregard for people with OCD. There's a lot of blank space. But the league explains that each element has a goofy explanation to it.

WORDMARK: MLS stands for Major League Soccer.

SLASH: The slash refers to soccer's speed and energy. The slash begins outside the perimeter and drives upward at a 45-degree angle to illustrate both the nonstop nature of our game and the rising trajectory of our league. It bisects the crest to create a "first half" and "second half."

STARS: The three stars represent the pillars of our brand: For Club, For Country, For Community.

PERIMETER: The perimeter represents the lines that mark off the field of play.

FIRST HALF AND SECOND HALF: The first half contains MLS and the three stars. The second half is an open white space that brings you in and out of the MLS world.

You might laugh at the clarification that MLS stands for Major League Soccer, but go to www.MLS.com and you'll see why that was necessary.

So that's the new MLS crest. The basic design will surely be criticized, but the thing about league logos is that no one ever really thinks much about them until they're changed. Good, bad, or somewhere in between, league logos really aren't worth getting too worked up about. And at least this one has that handy blank space that you can use your imagination to fill in with something too wonderful to actually exist. Like David Beckham.
