"Hair smash!"

Everton midfielder Marouane Fellaini has apologized for headbutting Stoke's Ryan Shawcross during Saturday's 1-1 draw. The incident occurred just before Everton took a corner kick and was missed by the referee, allowing Fellaini to go unpunished. But TV cameras and just about everyone else saw it (video here), so the Belgian was roundly criticized and prompted to apologize. Which he has now done.

From Everton's official website:

"I apologise completely to Ryan Shawcross, my team mates and to our fans at the game," said Fellaini.

"There was a lot of pushing and pulling going on inside the Stoke penalty area and I didn't feel I was getting any protection from the officials.

"Nevertheless I know I shouldn't have done what I did.

"I have also apologised to the manager and the staff. I have no excuses, I was disappointed with the way I was being treated and I lost my temper, which was unprofessional of me."

This incident will inevitably be compared to Zidane's famous headbutt on Marco Materazzi in the 2006 World Cup final, but Zidane's was far more devastating since he didn't have Fellaini's built in hair bag.
