Flares may be commonplace at the San Siro or the Istanbul derby, but they are rarely seen in the Premier League. This is because they are dangerous and there are very few maritime vessels in distress inside English stadiums during games.
During Tottenham's 2-0 victory over Aston Villa on Sunday, however, linesman David Bryan was struck on the back of the neck by a flare thrown from the crowd. It was hurled onto the field shortly after Andros Townsend gave Spurs the lead in the 31st minute, and caused a delay in the game while the smoke cleared. Bryan was able to continue to run the line without treatment.
It is thought that the missile was thrown by a Tottenham fan, and several sources indicate that the culprit was immediately found. The fan can take solace from that fact that he saw his side take three points, as it's the last time he'll step inside a Premier League stadium.
