German fourth division side score from ingenious ‘messed up’ free kick routine

Former German champions Rot-Weiss Essen currently ply their trade in the fourth division, where they fought back from a 2-0 deficit against Wattenscheid 09 to draw on Tuesday.

The equalizing goal came in the 80th minute from what appeared to be a botched free kick routine. Six Rot-Weiss players crowded around the dead ball, with each looking as if they intended to strike it as they argued with one another. The confusion, however, was a deliberate ruse to unsettle the goalkeeper, who was beaten when Benedikt Koep — the fifth player to take a run at the ball — struck a beautiful left-footed shot.

It appears that the German lower divisions have become a breeding ground for novelty set-piece experimentation, after RB Liepzig scored within seven seconds of treating kick-off like a gridiron onside kick last week.
