Those watching Barcelona emphatically overcome their tiny slump against Milan on Tuesday night missed a barnstormer of a game in Gelsenkirchen, as Galatasaray turfed the favored Schalke 04 out of the Champions League with a dramatic 3-2 victory (4-3 on aggregate).
Several Galatasaray fans who had made the journey to Germany also missed the game, with demand far exceeding supply for tickets in the away end.
An innovative group who didn't want to pay scalpers up to €1,000 for a ticket channeled The Great Escape for a genius plan: dig a hole in the freezing ground under the perimeter fence of the Veltins-Arena using no tools, then stroll into the stadium for free. What could go wrong?
Sadly, the plan was foiled. The Guardian reports:
Schalke's sporting director Horst Heldt has confirmed that a group of ticketless Galatasaray fans were caught trying to burrow into their stadium using their bare hands ahead of Tuesday's Champions League match.

Heldt confirmed the incident before the game, which ended with a 4-3 aggregate victory for the Turkish club, saying: "Yes, that's right. Some supporters have tried to dig a tunnel with their bare hands."
If the Gala fans had planned their reverse-escape using an elaborate full-body tattoo detailing the architectural plans of the venue, or dug with a spoon and covered the hole with a poster of Rita Hayworth, they might have gotten away with it. They obviously don't watch enough TV or films.
