Evan Longoria, the star third baseman for MLB's Tampa Bay Rays, debuted a new blond mohawk recently, and when he was asked about the haircut, he said its inspiration came from the soccer field.

Like lots of us, Longoria has been watching the World Cup closely, and decided to channel soccer stars for his new look. Mark Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times explains:

Evan Longoria had been sporting a Mohawk for a few days but decided Monday that blondes have more fun. His inspiration for the dye job was actually the World Cup, "and all the interesting hairstyles they have," and supporting the U.S. team.

While, Longoria didn't single out any particular player as his inspiration, he looks most like a cross between Mario Balotelli of the Italian team and DeAndre Yedlin of the U.S. Balotelli has probably the most famous mohawk in soccer. It's quite similar to Longoria's, except for the blond dye (which Balotelli used to have, but ditched a couple years ago). Yedlin isn't as clean-shaven, but plenty blond, and since Longoria says he's rooting for the U.S., this seems logical.

There are plenty more mohawks and fauxhawks around the World Cup, if that's your thing. Here are five notables:

As you can see, there's plenty of inspiration out there should Longoria want to change up his hairstyle weekly throughout the World Cup.
