Sunderland and Southampton played to a 2-2 draw on Saturday, but in the battle of attrition, Sunderland came out on top. Southampton's Gaston Ramirez had to be stretchered off in the 87th minute after a challenge from Black Cats defender Wes Brown caught his ankle, bending his foot at nearly a 90 degree ankle. As a result, we have the image above, which will probably make you suck air through your teeth.
Brown wasn't punished for the challenge.
Dejan Lovren, who scored Southampton's second goal, also had to be stretched off after suffering an injury in a separate incident. Manager Mauricio Pochettino later revealed that both players had been taken to a hospital for further tests. From Sky Sports:
"I am worried for Dejan and Gaston - they've both gone to hospital and they are being analysed," said the Southampton boss.
"They both looked like really painful injuries. We just need to see what the assessment is."
Maybe Ramirez and Neymar can become ankle buddies for the next few weeks.
