DTotD: Uruguayan Clásico ends in mass brawl and nine arrests

High-profile South American football matches are a lot like wedding receptions in Liverpool — they start off as an exciting spectacle, but there's a good chance both will end with a fight and some arrests.

Nacional and Peñarol faced one another on Tuesday evening in Uruguay's fiercely contested Clásico Charrúa. Clashes between the Montevideo rivals are often a little feisty, as proven by their meeting in January 2013 which resulted in a complete ban of football in the country for 10 days when Peñarol's goalkeeper punched a riot cop.

In the latest edition, Nacional were leading 1-0 in the 80th minute when Peñarol's Carlos Núñez put in a studs-up challenge on Guillermo de los Santos' groin. The aerial nutstamp sparked a mass brawl between players, substitutes and coaching staff, with punches reigning from both sides.

The match had to be stopped for six minutes and two players were sent off from each team.

The authorities are taking a hard line against the violence, as Spanish newspaper Sport says nine players were arrested on Tuesday evening. Due to the Uruguayan legal system apparently working almost as quickly as the one in Back to the Future II, they were due in court on Wednesday.

Incredibly, this game was actually part of a friendly tournament.

This has been the Dirty Tackle of the Day: a chronicling of unfortunate events.
