Belgium winger Dries Mertens purposefully shoved Gary Cahill into goalkeeper Joe Hart as the England defender chased down a ball in front of his own net just 16 minutes into Saturday's friendly (I repeat: It was just a friendly). The impact forced Cahill out of the match with what X-rays later revealed to be a double fracture of the jaw, which will prevent him from participating in Euro 12.
On Sunday, after he'd had enough time to realize what a cruel fate he forced upon Cahill just because he felt the need to get pushy during a friendly, Mertens apologized on Twitter. He said:
I sincerely apologize for the harm I've cost to Cahill. When in the heat of the moment, you often don't think about the consequences...
...My thoughts go out to him and I hope he recovers well!
Gary Cahill would've responded, but it's hard to curse someone out when your jaw is broken in two places.
This has been the Dirty Tackle of the Day: a chronicling of unfortunate events.
