DTotD: Bulgarian footballer gets six-match ban for body-checking referee

Dirty Tackle

Cherno More Varna defender Sasho Alexandrov earned a six-match ban for running into the referee after a penalty was awarded for his sloppy tackle from behind on a Levski Sofia player last weekend.

From Reuters:

Alexandrov, known for his aggressive manner on the field and frequent arguments with officials, was shown a straight red card for the 74th minute incident, with Levski 3-0 up and having just been awarded a questionable penalty by referee Stefan Spasov.

"I apologise to the referee, it was not on purpose," Alexandrov, who was also fined 2,500 levs ($1,700), told local media. "I was ashamed when he fell."

How was that not on purpose? He ran right into him, changing direction so to ensure a collision, and even put his arms up to brace for the impact. Did he think the referee was going to fly away before they made contact? Maybe Alexandrov can use his time off to become a better liar.

This has been the Dirty Tackle of the Day: a chronicling of unfortunate events.
