DTotD: Dynamo Kiev captain swallows his tongue after nasty collision with goalkeeper

Dynamo Kiev's visit to Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk on Sunday was marred by a nasty incident involving midfielder Oleg Gusev.

In the 25th minute, the Dynamo captain was chasing an aerial ball when he collided hard with Dnipro goalkeeper Denis Boyko's knee. Not only did Gusev lose consciousness, but he swallowed his tongue.

When it became clear that he couldn't breathe, players from both sides frantically tried to clear his airway. Fortunately, they they acted quickly enough to save his life and he was taken to hospital by ambulance as soon as he regained consciousness.

Incidences of players swallowing their tongues are relatively rare, but can have fatal results. John Terry was saved during the 2007 Carling Cup Final, but a 19-year-old Jordanian tragically died from a lack of oxygen last November.
