Crew goalkeeper second to score in MLS history thanks to Toronto

Dirty Tackle

Pretty much everything that can go wrong in a season has gone wrong for Toronto FC. And now, it's even suffered the embarrassment of being scored on by an opposing goalkeeper who says he had no idea what he was doing.

Up 2-1 in added time of Saturday's match against the Columbus Crew, Toronto seemed to have three points just about won when Crew goalkeeper Will Hesmer made the last-ditch decision to go forward on a corner kick. Said Hesmer after the match (via the Columbus dispatch):

"I gave them [the bench] the should-I-go? look," Hesmer said. "I think everybody was yelling 'no,' but I saw one finger point (toward the Toronto goal). That was all the permission I needed. [...]

"What did we have to lose?" Hesmer said. "I really didn't know what I was doing. Luckily, it went in."

Yes, thanks to some terrible defending and a fortunate deflection, the ball went in and Columbus pulled out a 2-2 draw thanks to just the second goal from a keeper in MLS history. Hesmer celebrated like a man who had no idea how to celebrate his first goal and Toronto's owners probably started writing another apology letter to fans.
