No matter what happens in Wednesday's World Cup semifinal between Argentina and the Netherlands, it will be tough to replace Germany's 7-1 win over Brazil in the news cycle. The host country is still in shock at the record-setting defeat and it will be interesting to see how inspired the side are for Saturday's third-place match.
The shock of the victory reverberated around the world as Germany quickly raced out to a 5-0 lead 29 minutes into the match. Twitter, as you can imagine, was quite busy with fans around the world reacting to the stunning display.
According to Twitter Data, the over 35.6 million Tweets involving the Germany-Brazil match was the most-talked about sports game on the social media site. Here's an animated graphic showing just how intense the Tweeting got as the match evolved:
The previous record was held by Super Bowl XLVII between the Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks when 24.9 million Tweets were sent.
Twitter also noted that when Sami Khedira scored Germany's fifth goal, a record 580,166 Tweets were sent in the following minute, surpassing the moment just after Chile's Gonzalo Jara's missed penalty kick against Brazil in the Round of 16.
The World Cup always brings a worldwide conversation and with Twitter such a big part of life in 2014, it's no surprise that people all over the globe were captivated by Tuesday's match and used to the social media service to express their shock and dismay.
